steering column help

Iam trying to install a steering column on my 84 t/a. I cant get the column to connect to the steering knuckle. The piece that sticks out from the firewall is the column and it needs to slid in the other metal piece. I think its the steering knuckle but its about 1/2 inch short. the two pieces connect with one bolt but I cant get them to reach eachother. Maybe there is a special tool or something that pulls them together but Iam not sure. any advice whould help.

I'll add that I swapped out a non tilt column for a tilt column in my 82 T/A and it bolted right up. No difference in column lengths. Just had to grease it so it slid in far enough.
