If I can get a pic, i will...
At school I had some really dark wood (nearly black) and some bizzare naturally-orange wood... so I made a shift **** myself. After I wax coated it, it turned the dark wood REALLY dark and the orange wood to almost Hemi Orange.
I made it on a wood lathe and its exactly the same shape as a Hurst T-handle
(For my 5 speed)

I just ordered a **** and shift boot off of ebay. I don't have a pic yet. They're from the 10th anniversary edition 03 SVT Cobra.
I'll have to rethread the end of my pro5.0 stick for the **** to work.
The're leather but textured like carbon fiber. The **** has the brushed aluminum insert with the 6 speed shift pattern like the regular 03 up cobra ****.

labrat,
That look awesome where did you get the shift boot or is that stock on corvettes?? Also how did you modify the stock shifter to use a boot?

The shift boot is from lightningautocustoms.com. They sell them on ebay for about $20. They say it's for a 84-89 Corvette with automatic. They also have one for a Third gen Firebird automatic, but it's not real leather like the Corvette.
All I did was remove the shift plate, take out the slider and put in the shift boot. I attached the boot with screws to the front and rear on the plastic where the slider was.
I didn't have to do any cutting on the shift plate or any mods to the shifter.
It was the easiest mod I've ever done!

labrat,
So this boot (the pic you posted) is not made out of the same stuff as the corvette boot? Also do you have the part number for the grand prix shifter?

The Corvette one is supposedly Italian leather, while the F-body ones are synthetic leather. I don't know if there is much of a difference I haven't seen them both side by side.
The one I bought was the Covette one because of the genuine leather vs. synthetic.
I had no trouble installing the Corvette boot, there a plenty of places on the shift plate to attach it without the screws showing.
I don't have a part number for the shifter. But if you go to a Pontiac dealership they should be able to find it for you. The seller claimed it was out of a 97 Bonneville. But my friends 2000 Grand Prix has it also.
I got the shifter off of ebay for $20. I thought it was a steal!
Just search for leather shift *****, one will come up again.

Found this neat little piece... metal hip joint. How sweet would this be as a shifter?
... it says "1 7/8 Vitallium" on it... wonder if that will weld up. Solid metal and it's as light as paper (

You could probably do hip surgery on yourself for 30 bucks (+ shipping for the parts)....thats assuming you have a saw, some towells, some glue, and some other stuff probably....haha

dakleenupman-
There is a U-shaped clip on the back/bottom(/front?
) of the shifter piece. Get something to pry it out with (small screw driver maybe). Should come straight out. After it's out... the shifter **** should come straight up.
