Hatch Problems

Ok i have a 1986 T/A so i dont think i have a remote hatch release do i? Well if i do i dont know where it is, lol. Anyways, i dont have a key for the hatch lock and the guy i bought my car from had opened it by crawling threw the front and doing something that opened the hatch from the inside. I want to know what exactly he could have done to open the hatch from the inside because ive NEVER opened it and i really need to. Any help is always welcome and appreciated.

Behind the panel at the rear of the hatch on the inside is the lock mechanism. There are 4 large plastic screws that you need to take out with a flathead screwdriver. Once the panel is removed, you can see that the latch is opened via a pull cable that comes from the key lock cylinder. If you have a "trunk pop" button, then you will also see a solenoid with a pull cable attached to it. Pull the lever to release the hatch (or one of the pull cables). The truck pop button should be on your dash or console if so equiped. If you find that it is not working, check your fuses under the dash.

two things there is a little (looks like a brake cable on a bike) cable that runs from the mech to the lock cylinder. You should be able to pull it off and use screw driver to get it open. Then go to napa or autozone or where ever and get a key cylinder and key. I would recomend getting a 4 peice set if its a hard top or non locking t-top. if its a t top try to find a matched set for all 6 locks. I hate extra keys, if mine wasn't a vats car I would try to find a set that would do all the locks. I'm sure someone carries a set, if not GM would but $$$$$ to be expected.

the other thing is on the front side you can get in there where the lock actuator would be and hit it.

If you had electric release it would be above the hvac control, I think, thats where its at in my formula

this is all considering the plactic peice isn't covering the back wall,

Riiiight...there are two phillips screws on the top of the panel that need to be removed. I dont think you're going to want to go in from the inside. Best luck is getting your lock re-keyed by a lock smith or just having it unlocked by one and buying a new key cylinder.

Yeah this is an old post but Im having the same problem with my 86 Camaro that I bought a couple days ago.It doesnt seem to have the power hatch release & I tried the key in it and it seems to fit but it wont turn, maybe Ill just have to get a new key cylinder too.Ill try it again tomorrow though & see if I was doing something wrong.

All the round head keys will go in the holes...but will not turn if the teeth on the keys are not cut right. Does the key open the doors ok? If so...maybe the lock cyl is going in the rear. You may have to jiggle or spray some WD40 in there.

Possible also someone rekeyed it long ago. Have a lock smith check it out!

T-top and trunk hatch, doors, and rear cargo glove box are all the same key!
