Door hinges and bushings
I'm new to this forum, so please excuse me if this subject has been discussed in previous posts. I've tried searching for info on it with no luck.
Here's my question:
I just bought a one owner 87 Trans Am.
http://www.cardomain.com/id/transam87tn
Body is in fairly good shape, but the driver's door has worn bushings. I was looking for some tips on repairing the door. I bought a hinge pin kit with bushings. Is the top hinge the only one you can take apart? Looks like the bottom hinge doesn't come apart. What's the easiest way to change the pin and bushings? Remove the door, or just pop the top pin out?
Thanks for the help!

With these aftermarket hinge repair kits you don't have to fully remove the door. You grind off the head of the pins and drive them out. Drive out the old bushings. Remove teh door spring. Remove the lower hinge pin & bushing. Then with the door supported, pull it back about 1" to prep the holes for the new bushings. Insert the new pins and tighten down, then the lower bushings & pin. Reinstall the door spring. The job takes roughly 2-3 hours per door. This is half the labor required to do it using GM's method which requires you to completly un-wire the door and set it on the ground. Drill out the old hinge spotwelds and drill and bolt in a new hinge. The aftermarket hinge repair kit uses superior parts and takes half the labor.
