Guage of metal
Hey guys i want to start repair my rusted floor boards and whatnot. i was woundering what guage sheet metal is the floor boards and anything body related? thanx.
I wouldn't go thinner than 18 gauge, 16 is probably better. Most body shops carry 18 or 22, but I find 22 rediculously thin. 16 is going to be very strong, although you may want to go with 18 to make it a bit easier to form into the shape you want.
I don't know if you're just repairing a patch, or the whole floorpan, I assume just a patch. If your floorpan is real bad, you should probably cut the section out from a junkyard car, and weld it in.
If you're replacing the whole floor pan, Classic Industries sells them. If you want to still go with sheet metal which I assume is cheaper than buying from Classic (not to mention shipping), I can give you one tip. Weld some steel straps across the space you're going to have the floor pan at about 2-3" intervals. Pound them down into the shape you want your floorpan, and then weld your 16 or 18 gauge sheet metal over them.
This will make it easier for you to put the sheet metal where you want it as well as making it easier to cut the sheet metal into the right shape. It will also give a bit more strength.
Hope this helps,
Mathius
