what is this LED for?

My 1988 IROC has this in the center shift consol plate. It was disconnected when I got the car. What is it for?

It was probably for the previous owner's alarm system.

Well, all anyone can do is speculate because that did not come that way from the factory.

well it seems to have come that way because around the LED, there's a lip that is actually part of the shift console. Doesn't appear to be glued onto the consol in any way. And besides, the LED for my alarm is up next to the ash tray

You can buy the LED's with a housing that makes them look as if they are factory. I have many in my car that look as if they are original. It just depends on who put the alarm in.

It could be for something else, but it is NOT factory. Unless you are the original owner, there would be no way to tell. Maybe you can trace the wires to see where they go.

Yeah, that is an alarm indicator most likely. If it was professionally installed then it should have a gromet like you have described so that it looks professional and not like some 10min hack job. That is what you should pay for when you get an alarm installed. If not, then it is just an indicator light for something. Like mentioned above, tracing the wire/wires back to something is the only true way to tell. That is what common sense tells me as well!
