Spoiler Questions
My T/A and my dads both need new spoilers due to the usual junk quality. I have looked around for the GTA style spoilers because we want to keep the cars looking original. I have heard people say that the fiberglass spoilers are risky because they don't fit right. I looked at Hawks, but does anyone know of any other places to get these spoilers. I am avoiding getting one from a junk yard.

Well, let's see,
These stock Pontiac spoilers are prone to cracking and spliting.
So, while in the market for a replacement:
1) Go to the junk yard. Price, if you find a halfway decent spoiler, is around $25.00 to $50.00. Now, you have to sand it down, fill in any imprefections, and get it painted. Price for this? Maybe around $150-$200. Problem with this? Good chance that it is already starting to rust on the inside. May last forever, probably not. You could have the same problem again real soon!
2) Buy used from someone. Price? From $50.00 to $400.00. You have to do all the above again. Problem with this? Same as above!
3) Buy NOS from Pontiac. well, not from Pontiac, since they are discontinued. So, you buy from someone who has one already. Price for this? From $1,000.00 to $2,000.00. You still have to paint it and prep it. Problem with this? Well, if you continue to do the same things with your car, like leave it outside in the rain or snow, or just wash it alot, water again can get underneath the spoiler, and cause the same damage! If it's a show car, or going to be parked in the garage, it will probably last alog time!
4) Buy fiberglass replacement. Price? Around $400.00 to $500.00, depending on shipping. More if you want it painted, but you may get a better deal around your area for the paint, and a better paint match. Problem with this? The fit is nowhere the same as the stock spoiler, but it does look good enough to go to car shows (I know, I have seen lots at the shows).
These are you options. Only you can decide.
What would I do? Well, since I own a 1989 20th Anniversary Turbo Trans Am, I would go the NOS route! Why? Well, cause I show my car, and for it to have the highest resale, it has to have the stock parts on it! I keep my car in the garage all the time, and do the car show circuit.
But, for any other car, I would go the fiberglass route.
Now, as for the price of the fiberglass spoilers.
The main reason for the high price is the legwork of the getting it finished to final product. You gotta pay for the design, the molds to be made, and the people who make the item, as well as the cost of marketing the item. Advertising costs, the boxing of the item, etc. I'm sure I have left out some things, but you get the idea. After this, you also have to take in account, how many to produce, and you finally have to figure in the profit. Profit? Yes, everyone has to make money.
Try making a rear spoiler out of fiberglass yourself. It will cost you more than what everyone else is selling theirs for!
I hope this gives you an idea of pricing.
Just trying to help,
George

Fitment isn't a real problem on the aero spoiler, or at least it wasn't for me. Now you are not just going to bolt it on. My bigest problem when I put my fiberglass one on was my deck lid, the bolt holes had pulled up allitle from I am assuming the previous owner opening the lid with bad shocks with the spoiler. I had to hammer down the lid around the holes to get rid of the gap. The sides fit real good, especially if you mount it at all the points, the spoiler only comes with what is needed to mount at the two front points on the arms.
Now here is the problem the leading edge of the spoiler is squared off. The factory one is more like a wing in that aspect. Im sure if this was something you were worryed about you could fix it.
Here is some pictures.
And it comes gel coated and primed, one last block sand and paint is all you need. I got it at ram air hood up top.

I have to say, Mr. TurboTA, if I wanted a smart a$$ response, I would have looked else where. The fact of the matter is that it does not cost a whole lot to injection mold a spoiler that is mass marketed. Another thing is that with mass market, advertising and making a "profit" is irrellavant due to the fact that once the product is out there, people will advertise by word of mouth. Your opinion was worthless. Are you all right with this.
Thanks though Aviator857, your comments were worth something. The fit of the spoiler concerned me a little, but I realize that with some work and patience, it can be done. Thanks.

Wow TransAmBOY87!
I was trying to help you.
I don't see anywhere where I left a smartass response to you! I really was trying to help you. I must have offended you in some way? What was it that BOTHERED you? I, in no way, ever even thought of doing that!
I can give plenty of examples of items costing lots of money.
Case in point, 20th Anniversary Turbo Trans Am emblems. They are made the same way as all the GTA emblems, so you get the idea. These have been discontinued for years, and while being NOS, if still found that way, can fetch alittle over $1,000.00 for a complete set! Back when they were new, probably around $300.00 or so. Now, a company called CAR Motorsports reproduced them. They are selling them on ebay right now, for $500.00 a set!
Now, the NOS rear spoiler for the 1987 Trans Am cost way over $400.00 when new, so I think that is a great deal for what they are asking now!
I also know that you don't live near the beach, or buy new surfboards (which are just made out of foam and alittle bit of fiberglass). Do you know that these boards start at $500.00 and up?
So don't think that things should be worth $200.00 just because YOU decide!
Are you going to go to college? Maybe you should become a business major. That, or start a business making Trans Am rear spoilers that sell for $200.00, and put everybody out of business! You can become rich, and make many friends here on this site!
Of course my opinion is worthless to you! I'm sure that this is also.
I hope someday you can read and see what people try to do here on these message boards. They try to help!
I never said anything negative to you, or even questioned your intelligence.
Good luck in life,
George

np: These are not injection molded they are hand layed though, so that is a little of the cost. But He is right the factory ones were 1800 from gm when they sold them. Look on ebay you can get a fiberglass one for around 200 but you will have to do the smoothing of it b4 paint, they are not as finished as the 400+ ones, I think the co is in canada so shipping might be a lot.
And to get it aligned it took me about an hour.

Sorry, Mr. TuboTA, you did help me. I hope that you read the PM I sent you. Sorry about that.
Anyway, I understand what you are saying with the cost aspect, but I want a spoiler that hasn't had any work done to it just to save money.

i have had a fiberglass areo wing for about a year and half. No fitment problems and i'm very happy with it. I went through 3 factory spoilers before getting it. Factory ones always cracked after a while. I paid $400. You might want to look into this site. I think he makes them and distributes them to the other companys that sell them. www.gtautoacc.net

Thanks TPI-Formula350, I think I might look into getting my spoiler from there. Where exactly are they located, I am not familiar with the area code.

The board sponser has it for cheaper, this is the one I have.
Isn't GTautoacc the company that just up and disapeared last year? Now there wing is good so if they are back in full production you will not be dissaponted.
https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...ghlight=gtauto
Of course each of the companies claim they make it for the other. gtauto told me they make it for everyone, and then when I was trying to decide who to buy one from after they dissapeard for a while ramairhood told me they made it for gtauto but who knows
