Aftermarket Steering Wheel
Hey All,
I was going to replace the Steering wheel in my T/A with another steering wheel from a 3rdgen TransAm however I can't seem to find one in a wrecking yard or on ebay that I like. SO!! my next plan is to get an aftermarket wheel from Canadian Tire. They have some nice ones there for about 80$. Nothing crazy with NOS buttons or anything...just something simple. My Steering wheel isn't in the greatest shape. Looks like someone bit into the top portion of it and the rest of the leather/pleather is starting to crack and fade, I tried putting an old Steering wheel wrap on it but that just don't cut it. I figured I would replace it.
My question is, has anyone done this mod. If so care to elaborate on how hard this is to get done and what material other then the aftermaket wheel will be required. Thanks.

I have on my '83. I put a Grant wheel on it. It was pretty easy, took about an hour to do it.
I don't have air bags in my car though, and an '88 probably does. If not, its an easy mod. If it does, it will be more complicated, but probably not overly hard. I haven't got a clue where to start on an air bag car though.

usally involves just getting a steering wheel adapter for the wheel you buy so it will bolt onto the hub of the column, and possibly a horn wiring kit, although that can be done DIY most of the time

go here to see more wheels, crappy tire can order others in for you. Also im 99% sure that the APC wheels at crappy tire are made by grant and interchangable with grant products.
plan about 29bucks (canadian)for a gm grant istalation kit,,, and of cource the price of the wheel.
I have a signature series formula GT wheel on the roc......i also see other kids for sale used in the classifides everynow and then.
theres a 90% chance you need a sterring wheel puller to get your old one off. Crappy tire at the parts desk has a "loan a tool" Steering Wheel Puller for like 20 bucks or so....once you bring it back youll get all your money back for it.
other then that you may need a few wrenches or sockets thats it. To hook up the horn you may need to run one wire but that is provided i think in the kit.

Ok...I plan on getting my wheel tonight. I am going to go to Crappy tire and see about that wheel addapter kit as well as the wheel itself.
I like the look of both of those wheels on your cars. Gives it that formula racing look for sure.

Yep, just buy the wheel you like, then get the proper adapter for it. There was a big list of P/Ns on the back of my Grant wheel's box.
You'll need to rent a steering wheel puller too, while you are there.

Well I bought my wheel and addapter. The wheel I got was the P/N 1195. It kinda looks like 86WS6_T/A's but mine is dualtoned black and white. Adapter costed me 25.95 and the wheel was 99.95. These prices are Canadian currency. Parts should be in next week when I start getting my car ready for the road.

got mine from Checker Auto, $99.00 plus install kit. U will need a steering wheel puller, unless your a freak of nature and can pull it with your bare hands (doubt it). Pulling kit costs about $19.99.
If you have the year with an air bag, you have to disconnect battery, disconnect the wiring to the bag and then carfully pull the wheel. First time I did one scared me, I kept thinking it was going to blow in my face (dam 3rd gen air bags are like metal) ouch
anyway, my pic...

Here's my Grant Sig Series. I also purchased the billet 'collar' in black and a silver Camaro horn button. I love the feel.

I'm suprised this thread has gone this long without someone mentioning MOMO Steering Wheels. They are kind of pricey but once you feel them you'll know why they cost that much.
This is powermite's interior. I love this car, it's the smoothest interior I have ever seen on the internet.

I'm running a Grant wheel in my 89 IROC Drift Project. Here's the only pic I have (sorry pretty bad quality):
Everything ran me $125 (inc the bowtie horn button hehe), and install took about 35 minutes (with the puller).

dont have a pic of mine, but it looks just like the grant one. the one with 4 spokes, i dunno what its called, its made by APC. i love it, but when im turning it rubs on my hand and it makes it fele like im getting a blister. o well gotta deal with it. i love my wheel. the wheel fits almost inside the stock wheel, its about 1" in diameeter smaller than stock and it makes the car easier to drive.

well of course i love mine. it gives a racing look and feel to the car plus the flattened bottom gives a LOT of leg room. and people always ask if my horn buttons are for nitrous (or NOS as they say

That steering wheel kicks *** man!!! It's got a nice aggressive yet comfortable look! I personally HATE driving someone elses car when their steering wheel is so small in thickness that my hands get cramps after only 15 minutes! I may as well hold a fist for that long if I wanted hand cramps.
