Loose Steering Problem
I just picked up my Z28, and it has a loose steering column. It has tilt wheel, but before I try to rip it apart, I was curious to see if this is a common problem, and if so, what is the fix.d
the whole column has to come apart to get to the 4 e8 bolts at the bottom of the bowl to tighten it. any body shop will do it for about how much it will cost you to buy all tools and lock tight to do it yourself and a lot less hassle to try to remember where everything goes. it is a common problem and i did a ton of them

I got a quote
From the garage that I usually go to and they told me that it would be about $140. Is that in the right ball park, or should I shop around?

If the collar "floats" around, the ignition key can be moved around to the point where the car will shut down, then the 4 reverse torx bolts have come loose.
I was in Seattle when it happened to me and they wanted 200 bones for a new column. I just got pissed off and started tearing it down myself. Removed the whole steering column from the car and just worked my way down to the bolts one part at a time.
Cost me $6.00 for the reverse torx bit and a the use of a 1/4 inch drive and 5 inch extension.
A nuclear bomb could go off near my car and the column bolts would still be tight.
Good luck,
Jim.
