Oh yeah I have a 1990 RS with the stock assembly

Assuming it isn't broken, it should work with your car. It'll go on at an angle, facing the driver, ifs thats what you mean, but that's to make it easier on your hand. As for not shifting, and I don't mean to insult your intelligence, but did you put the U clip back in? It could be that the shifter is just broken, missing a spring, or whatever. I mean, hell, I put a '02 Saturn T-handle on my brother's camaro and it worked fine.

Yup, just pop the clip out with a flat head screwdriver. No biggie. If you got a longer screw driver, just shift into drive, or neutral or whatever, but make sure you have the e-brake on.

And yes, in order for the shifter to work, the U clip has to be in there. It takes a little work, I usually just pinch it with some pliers, then push it in with something hard, like the handle of the screw driver you already have, to pursuade it. And as for the Saturn T-handle working, you'd be surpised how cheap GM is

because we had cavalier seats in it
