alligator skin

Yep Im starting to get this, on my 81 malibu I had the same problem with it on my trunk. Now on my 1992 Firebird Im starting to notice small cracks on the roof and some on the hood as well. I got it from a guy who always kept it in the garage and I have to store mine outside under a car cover. I have had it under the cover for almost 2 years (the end of the month) with the occasonal drive, the cover is made by wolf and was suppose to be good from what I hear. I will have a house by the end of next summer so this will be the last chicago winter it will be in. How am I suppose to protect it untill then, every time I get it out I wash it and always wax before summer and just before winter, is there any way of stopping this or at least slow it down? What causes this? I heard the GM painting problem was suppose to be resolved by 92 true?
