speedometer quit working

On my 89 IROC--350/700R4--cruise control--speedo quit working. code 24

Is this car an electronic driven speedo rather than a cable driven? What would be the most likely thing wrong and/or what would be the correct trouble shooting procedure to locate what needs replaced?

Thanks!!!
Craig

89 was the last year for cable driven speedometers for Camaros. Im not sure why it would quit working though.

$1165.00 to fix the speedo? Did they tell you what was wrong with it or what they had to replace?

yeah they claimed that to replace the speedometer cable was 8 hours of work and they charged me for that then the diagnostic they ran to tell that it was broken was 89, then they said they had to drop the tranny to replace a 2 dollar gear, that part was 800.
