How to deal with rust...

I am currently in the process of prepping my car for a new paint job. I took it to 2 reputable body shops and they told me that they could spray over the old paint without a problem as long as I prep everything right. I've just pulled and patched up some dents and the next thing to do is get rid of some surface rust around the wheel wells and underneath the fin. I've ran some searches, but I'm still a little confused.
What do I use to get rid of the rust?
What do I need to do once I remove the rust to have the car ready to paint?

Thanks alot guys

You need sand the rust out if its real bad use a grinder with a flexable pad. After the rust is gone you need to fill the holes where the rust was with a light weight body filler AKA BONDO. If you get the bondo that turns blue or yellow instead of pink theres less of a chance of it coming out. After you have it all fixed up and the fixed spots primed hit the car with some 400 grit wet dry sand paperm, use soapy water and get all the paint surfaces super smooth, I like to run the hose on it as I work. Once the body is smooth and the water you run on it looks like clear coat its ready for them to paint. It's highly suggested that you remove any peices from the car you do not want painted. When you get to that place remove the liscense plates so that area on the bumpers gets painted, famous Macco work at its best.

Wouldn't you want to use rust converter after you sand it down to help keep it from coming back up?

Sandblast the rust...Th only way too ensure you get all of it out of the pits. The a small ammount of duraglas over the pitted areas for holdout. them skim coat with poly putty for scratches, prime and paint.

What he said thats the best way to do it with a grinder you could end up with small amounts of rust down in the holes still that could come up and rust throught the paint ina few years
