Treating rust prior to painting

My car is getting painted. The body is in good shape except for a little rust around the rear wheel arches. I have removed the rust but I want to do everything possible to stop it comming back. My body shop guy says it will always come back unless you cut it out and weld in new arches. Is this correct, or is there something you can use to stop it?

Does anyone know where you can buy new rear arches and I could cut and weld them in?

Thanks

Do you have any pictures of the rust? If it was a bad spot yes it will come back if you didnt get it all out as far as having 100% of the rust out of the car its impossible wherever 2 peices of metal are welded together there will be rust inbetween.

por15 is paintable as i understand...never heard of it being used under a paintjob, but it might be worth a try...you would definitely have to remove as much rust (especially loose rusr) as possible first...i used it on a bare frame and it worked just fine... www.por15.com

I will try and get a picture tomorrow and post it.

I had though of POR-15 and had tried it. I used it on the wheel wells and it works excellently. I just think it might be a little thick for a part of the body that is visible. That was my only concern.

If the area is not as bad.. and not to deep. I would put a good coat of epoxy primer over it.. it's the best choice replacement for the OEM E-Coat that is put on the metal prior to painting them in the factory.

Hi Robert,
I can't believe the bodyshop came up with that conclusion?. POR is a bit heavy for that sort of finish.I have always used the very reliable method of removing as much as possible, like you've done, and finish off with a phosphoric acid product.I have used Jenolite or Hammerite rust remover from Halfords to great effect. It will eat out every last speck of rust.Just do the normal etch primer/2 pack thing over the top. It may be a different matter if the arches are holed and the rust is coming from behind.Good luck mate.

Neil,

The rust was just surface. My body shop guy has sanded it all down and used Kurust on the areas effected. I'll have to start a new thread showing the work in progress. This is long overdue.
