Well the guy at Canadian Tire didnt know what I was talking about. Looks like the best way to do this would be to cut out the area immediately around the scoop and then just weld it into the new fender....

That's something you'd want to call up Acklands grainger and ask about. Or Sams bodyshop supplies, right across the street...

U can take a hammer and dolly and make that lip. Its a little harder but can be done.

I was thinking of taking a block of wood and cutting it in half, with the lip in the middle, so I could just put each side over the edge and pound the pieces together and they would form the lip that way?

U but fiberglass on the bumper. Thats a big no no. Its going to crack... and if u do keep it on there u want it as thin as possable

we're talking the flexible front clip? why'd you fiberglass it? I thought yours was beyond repair?
You'd probably want to look into a SEM plastic product (read KevinG's sticky at the top of body and interior for plastic repair). The fiberglass will be pretty brittle i'd think... but yea, few layers as possible will leave it flexible...

Just fiberglassed the back. Then the front gets filled with flexible epoxy. I figured before I spent 200 bucks on a new bumper, I would at least try to fix mine. My neighbor is a retired bodyman and he suggested I at least give it a shot, first. We'll see what happens. And since the flexible epoxy (designed to bond/seal/fill rubber and flexible plastic) is filling it from the front, if the fiberglass cracks, nobody will know. I even found a 3x3" piece of fiberflass already under there. Right on the bottom, where it flexes the most. And it's fine...

UPDATE:

Things are going really well. I cut the old fender and the new one in the same spot. Right above the scoop, and welded the whole bottom part of the old fender onto the new one. Then I test-fitted it today, and it fits almost perfect. The curvature is exactly as it should be. Just need to smooth it out a bit, a little bondo, and paint. Boom. You'll never be able to tell.

The bumper cover is going along nicely too. Decided to try to fix the crack. I was really careful, took my time, and it looks awesome. Filled the crack from the front with really cool flexible epoxy, sanded it smooth. I just hit it with two coats of primer. Debating another coat, as you can still see through to the dark gray (the can started to sputter and it was hard to get an even coat) And where the crack was, it looks perfect. Little more sanding, paint, and I am sure it will look great.

I'll snap some pics and post them in a bit. Still have to put the bumper on the car...

oh good, flexible epoxy for the bumper.. and fiberglass behind it? I'll have to remember that for mine soon... What brand was the epoxy? Where'd you get it?

You don't have access to a spray gun at your school eh? hmm, that's too bad, the rattle can primer may be the weak point... A good brand at least right? I like the Plasti-cote stuff, self etching, sandable... but the garbage at Canadian tire I wouldn't paint my lawn furnature with...
Anyway, spray gun for the top coat to match though right?

don't matter if u use a spray gun for the top coats. If u have cheap rattle can paint under it.Its going to f up. When u spray base coat on it it will lift.But anyways. get some pics out so we can see your handy work.

Yup. I went to a paint shop, spoke with the guy for a while. I asked the same questions about rattle can primer, but he assured me it would be fine. And if it doesnt stay, hey, I can always go and do it again. I'll already have a lot of paint left over. He mixed me up a gallon.

And, aw, geez. I forget the brand of the epoxy.. I'll go look in the garbage tomorrow morning. As for the primer, er, forget that too. THe guy said it was good stuff...

So I couldnt find a trans am fender. Repro would be about 100 from the school. But I figured hey, i've got this fender here, why not try something... Cut and weld. So I did. Was SUPER careful to make the right cuts and welds. I'm pretty happy with how it's turned out. I still need to grind and file it more, but I decided to test fit it today to see how it's coming, and what, if any, changes I have to make. We'll see how it looks with paint on it..

The second pic shows the gaaaaap. But the fender isnt aligned yet. Want to paint if off the car, anyway. Third shows the curvature. Almost spot on. Fourth pic shows the shaved antenna. Had a LOT of trouble here, but I think once I smooth it over, it'll be ok..

And hey, it's all a learning experience. Doesnt hurt to try.

What shop are you going to? I need to find an autobody shop that knows what they're talking about, doesn't rip me off hardcore, and is possibly open on weekends.... but hey, might as well wish to win the lottery while i'm at it...

Geez! you didn't even wash the fender when you welded that! did you grind much paint off first? it doesn't look like it... It does look like a good job though.

Jay, you say primer is best used as spray gun, but top coat can be rattle can? huh, that's contradictory to what I thought...

you got a gallon of paint mixed up for spray gun right? did you get the rattle can filled with custom mixed paint, or just off the shelf? I think Sams autobody supply can put paint in a rattle can for you, and so can Grainger I think.... I'm not so wild about the knowledge of the guys at grainger though, I told them I wanted a good rust paint, like POR-15, or something... they gave me rust-mort, a rust dissolver...? and I had to go back 3 times to get the correct flap wheel, 'cuz they can't read the grit size on it, or the arbor size (4.5" angle grinder, not 5" guys!!!!)

ahem, anyway, let me know where you get this stuff, later this summer I'll probably be re-painting my car, and I can't get to places that are only open 9-5 M-F when i'm working...

Sorry for taking so long to reply Sonix, didnt see you posted again. Well I got it custom mixed, matched to the busted headlight panel I brought in. For a spray gun. I've painted the hood and the fender and the new headlight panel so far. It's gone well. Wet sanded the fender the other day with my friend, but he messed up so I had to respray the fender. Just did the hood today because it was nice out. The paint on the fender keeps running because my gun sucks, but oh well. I'l sand it off no problem. Hood went pretty well.




I think for the bumper I am gonna go back and see if they can put the rest of the paint in a couple of rattle cans so it doesnt run.. My gun SUCKS. I'm not sure how much flex agent to mix with the paint for the bumper, and nobody seems to know.


Oh, think it would look cool if i added a bit of pearl to the hood? Just the hood...

I don't think any kind of rattle can paint should be on a car. But if u had to u want to put a good primmer or sealer on. All primmers in a rattle can are lacquer. Over time it will srink.


and 305q_ta86 the gun i bet is ok. Most of the time it the person useing it.. Try turning it down some or waiting longer in between coats. On your first coat is not for covering. Just spray some on there let it tack up. Than the next coat u can put on wetter. It will have something to stick to. And wash that thing lol

Yeah, it gets a bath soon. Dont wanna wash it with fresh paint. Well the thing aboutthe gun is that it's one from home depot, meant for spraying your fence. Big round spray pattern.. I've got it at about the lowest setting it has.. But I also suck anyway. You're right on that point. No previous experience painting cars...

Well I sanded the hood and the fender today and it looks pretty good. Just need to touch it up a bit, and I should be good. Maybe some clear over top to help protect it?

LOL that is awesome, I did a search for "custom fender" and this thread popped up. Interesting, back in 05, as soon as he said it was the sprayer for fence type applications, no one replied. I'm left wondering if he blew his place up with an electric spray gun when he went to spray the paint or the clear. heh.. I've seen what happens with a cloud of clear coat when it comes in contact with an exposed wire on a backup exhaust fan soooo.. I can imagine an electric spray gun, (that probably wouldn't atomize the paint right anyway) could make for an interesting light show!

Wow I haven't visited TGO in a long, long time. I sold my last Fbody years ago.. But no, I didn't blow anything up. I did all the painting outside and even got the thing back together in time for my highschool grad. It wasn't the best paint job ever, a 5 or 10 footer to be sure, but the fender fix actually turned out really well. Almost seamless, so for a first time job I think I did pretty well.
