New Carpet Q
I have some used carpet that im about to install but it doesnt have the sound deadener on the back of it anymore and i was wondering
i dont have a system and most people just say its extra weight but is the deadener important to have due to the rising exhaust heat...my buddy was pointin this out to me and i want to make sure its safe for a daily driver to be sound deadenerless (not a word)????
Is it ok? any cheap alternatives to keep the heat down...thin pading material anyone know of?
or is it even necessary?

The jute padding (gray stuff on the back of carpet) provides both sound deadening, provides padding, and is a heat barrier. It is not "needed" in the car but it does all 3 of those things. If you don't run any padding below the carpet, your carpet will not feel as soft as it does now under your feet. It will feel like a thin layer of carpet sitting on some sheet metal. This will allow the carpet to wear out MUCH MUCH faster. 2ndly, you will notice that the car will be a lot louder inside. The noise produced by both the engine (exhaust) and the road noise will be louder. Lastly, there will be a rise in temp in the car, although maybe not a noticable one. Depending on your exhaust type and routing this may change.

it'll probably be unbearably loud
these cars are already pretty loud in the first place when it comes to road and engine noise.

In many places you can put the new carpet right over the old and have the factory insulation, plus two layers of carpet. Have to do some trimming of the old stuff to get a good fit in several areas but will look fine when done. Done this before as new aftermarket carpeting doesn't have the heavy mass backing of the factory and it does help to quiet the car some.

You can go to a local upholstery store where you would get your seats recovered, and they will have the jute padding. If you take your old carpet in, they could probably quckly cut exactly what you need to lay it down in the car.....saving you from putting your nice new carpet on the metal floor, or as tom3 did and laying it over the old. I'm not a huge fan of that idea.....I've seen it, but I don't like it. I always thought of putting new carpet in was to get rid of the old CR@P. Old carpet smells bad anyways....
