Confused about my paint code and color.

Ok guys, I havn't been on here in almost 2 years because I had traded my Camaro to my brother in summer '03. Well, after regretting trading it, I offered to trade back with him this past spring, and now I have my old SC back. Here is the story: http://www.cardomain.com/ride/253549/8. Anyway, I am getting ready to paint it, and I have a problem with the paint code.

Ok, my car has the factory paint code "82" which (according to GM) is Charcoal metallic. When I looked up the codes for an '83 on www.paintscratch.com, it says code "82" is Midnight Sand Gray Metallic. But here's the thing, it has a code "84" listed as Charcoal Metallic. It also has little pictures of the colors, and the Midnight Sand Gray looks a little more brown than Charcoal.

Here is what it has:

Midnight Sand Gray Metallic 82/WA7714
Midnight Sand Gray Metallic 82E/WA8322
Midnight Sand Gray Metallic 82W/WA7714
Charcoal Metallic 84/WA7197

Which one would be my factory color? Any help would be appreciated guys....

Thanks,

Matt

This is the best I can help you:

WA8322/ code 82E was for Chevy and Pontiac 1983-1984
WA7714/ code 82w was for Chevy and Pontiac 1983-1984

WA7197/ code 84 was for Chevy, Pontiac, Cadillac, and Buicks for 1982

If you have code 82 stamped on your build tag, then it is probably the WA8322 or 7714. Maybe the car had been repainted before you bought it and they had the same problem as you are having now.

My experience with the numbers are if it only lists Chevy and Pontiac, then this included the Fbody. If it was shared among the other divisions, then it usually wasn't on the Fbody for that year. (If someone wants to correct me here, please do).

That's the best I can do for you.

FYI- I got this info from autocolorlibrary.com

Color codes for 1983 Chevys, Which shared Colors with most of the GM models Including Pontiac

Chevrolet codes can be confusing! For example, the color code 96/WA8867 listed on our site can be shown on your vehicle as 96U or 96L or 8867 or WA8867. Often there will be a BC CC before the color code. This stands for Basecoat/Clearcoat. The U in the paint code means the Upper Color and the L means the Lower Color. Two tone vehicles will have each color coded, i.e. 96U and say 36L. Also, it could be 8867L or 8867U.

Thanks for your help, but I have already seen that chart. That's where I got my info from. The question was whether my color was Charcoal or Midnight Sand Gray. By the looks of it, I have Midnight Sand Gray (Code 82). If anyone can confirm this, feel free to do so.

Thanks for the help guys!

82, but according to my "old" research, 82 is called charcoal on Camaros. Thats my problem, because according to www.paintscratch.com, the code for charcoal is 84.

Oh, I understand your question now. The color maybe a different name among divisions.

The official color for my car from Chevrolet is Light Blue Metallic. However, the pontiac color is Maui Blue Metallic. Same paint code and WA number, but different names. PPG listed it as Maui Blue Metallic with the same paint code and WA number as what was on my RPO sticker. So that is what I bought and it matches.

My S10 and my brother's Grand Am have the same code/ number but are different names. Mine is Victory Red and his is Bright Red.

Could be that where you got the name for your color is listing it as a different name. Go by the codes and numbers and you can't go wrong.
