Body prep

The 91 RS i just bought was painted black for no real good reason. The paint under neath seems to be fine. It doesn't look like who ever painted the car even sanded the clear coat off. Is there any way to get the black paint off without further damaging the green original paint? and if not what kind of sander and what grit paper should i use to prep for the body shop?

First find a body shop. A lot will not touch your car if you do your own prep. 1) they make money on all that sanding and leveling without actually waisting the expensive stuff (i.e. bc/cc) 2) they don't trust people doing prep because if 6 months later paint starts peeling off, you might come back and blame them when it was the prep that was bad.

I am using DA 6" sander with 80 grit to take everything down to bare metal. Going all the way is my personal choice, if your original coating is still good and no rust anywhere, then you can probably sand down to the primer (the first one). Now sure how you would do that though.

I don't mean to hijack this thread but my question might pertain to Underkule too.

the original green gray metalic paaint is chipping on my 92 RS. mostly on the doors and around the windshield. I already got new paint to put on it from my uncle that ownes a auto parts store. I bought an orbital sander to sand down the areas where I have to fix some dents and around the chips in the paint. I have heard that GM used bad primer on some 92 camaros.

my question is, do I have to sand the whole car down to metal to get rid of the bad primer? Or can I just fix the bad spots and take the car to mako and have them use my paint to re paint it?
thanks
