1989 firbird shifter ****
Sorry if this was asked before I did look to see. But where can a get a factory replacement? I see I can get the storage cover for the center console on several sites, but no shifter ***** for the late model 1980's Firebirds...
Thanks
Thanks
Your signature says the car is a 5.7 liter, so I assume it's an automatic? Does the shifter have a leather cover?
Are you trying to replace it with something perfect, and the exact same as the original, or just something that looks nice?
Pretty much all the shift handles for console-shift GM automatics from the '80s and '90s are compatible. Place the shifter in low gear, and on the forward-facing edge you'll see this small metal bar.....pry it out most of the way, and then the shifter comes right off. Try not to pull the metal thing entirely out, because it is somewhat difficult to get back in.
Anyway, go to the junkyard and find something you like that's in nice shape. Handles from Camaros, Corsicas, and Cavaliers will fit fine, but look different. Pontiac Bonnevilles will have the same shifter as your car, and possibly in better condition.

I'm pretty sure most versions of the auto-T-handle and manual trans shift ***** are still available from the dealer. If you can't get wholesale/jobber pricing(30% discount) from your dealer you might try a GM parts discount website like www.gmpartsdirect.com
If used is fine I would check the junkyards. Pontiac used the same shift ***** in many of their cars. Look for 1980s Grand Prix, J2000/Sunbird, Fiero, 6000 and of course, Firebirds.
