headlight is having issues.

My 1988 GTA just started giving me fits tonight. This was the first time in a couple weeks I drove the car at night and needed the headlights. I turned them on and the drivers side popped right up no problem but the passenger one didnt. I havent really taken a look at it yet to see whats going on but it will come half way up stop maybe bounce around a little then it will either stop or finish coing up. I also noticed then I shut them off the one seems to run a couple seconds after the light is down. I was wondering what the common things are to look for so when I start checking things out I know what to look at first. I was also wondering how hard it was to remove the assembly if it turns out to be a bad motor or something like that.

My driver side did the same thing.

3 months later, it wen't kaput.
I don't have a door on it(for other reasons) so now I can just reach down and flip it up and down by working the lever.

I read somewhere on here that it was the gearset in the motor.
IIRC, the replacement set was $30-$40, and wasn't rocket science to accomplish. Just make sure to have a couple extensions to pull the main assembly.

Oh, and disconnect the battery!!
Strange things happen when working with live electronics, all of them not good.

If your time is worthless like mine you could search for it.

I'm sure we're not the only ones with this.

I wrote a Tip Article on how to fix the headlight motor. Maybe a mod could sticky for future ref. Ill get the link.

/edit: Here is the link:

My headlights did the same thing, I did exactly what I wrote in the article and they worked just fine. And it costs as much as a piece of fuel line, if you dont have some lying around.

ok so here will be my plan of attack, Im gona order a headlight repair kit from tds and a gear as well. Ill tear the thing apart and just replace it all and be done with it, who knows I may get froggy enough and do both sides and call it a day.
