How is top of hatch 3rd brake light mounted?

I am considering replacing my cracked aero spoiler with a different style.

That will leave me with no 3rd brake light.

I always liked the look of the high-mount 3rd brake light.

How does the high-mount 3rd brake light attach to the top of the hatch glass on the other models?

86 its just two large bolts through the glass. On the early 90s ones I believe its mounted on the inside somehow, so the glass is still a single hole-free piece. The rest had lower mounted third brake lights.

FYI-

To go 86 style you would have to get a new rear windshield or drill holes in the glass(is that possible?)

To go 91-92 style you would have to get a new rear windshield or remove your rear defrost (too much work if even possible) and replace it with 91-92 defrost if you wish.

edit: not new windshield either could be used...

Thanks for the replies...

I've decided to use a late 1990's Chevy SUV LED 3rd brake light.

Simple clean design and mounts flat.

I did the research on this... I had a spare defrost hatch from a '83 to put on my '86 and I wanted to keep the high mounted brake light. The glass is tempered and tempered glass can not be drilled, It will crack. What I did was: Cut the post where the bolts go through (which is also where the light gets its power) I soldered a thin 2 wire piece of ribbon cable to the light that came out of the top side of the light through a small hole I drilled next to the weather stripping and sealed with silicon and ran the wires from the back to under the rear head liner trim. I siliconed the bottom of the light down to the glass and used black trim paint to paint the inside of the glass like the original. It worked good I never had any problems with it coming loose or rattling, too bad I never took a pict of it before the car got wrecked
RIP '86 'Bird
