I need some help!!!

I am new to this painting thing and have some questions. I have decided to repaint my engine bay while I am in the procces of building a new motor. I have prepped it and today I tried shooting it with a catalyst 2 part primer. Before I put the stuff in the gun I sprayed a little paint thinner through the gun to clean it out. This was just paint thinner you get at home depot. I then mixed the primer and put it in the gun. It sprayed like crap!!! I was drying as it was coming out of the gun. I now have a sand like texture on my firewall! I said F*** it and called it a day. I put some of the same old paint thinner in the gun and tried to claen it out, and the primer seemed to dry when it came into contact with the thinner. I had some other thinner in a can that a friend gave to me in order to thin out some por15. I used this to clean up the disaster I made. this stuff worked like a charm. It still took me 2 hours to clean my gun though.

I think this is where I screwed up, I used that cheap crap thinner in my gun before spraying, and the little bit that remained in the gun f***** everything up?
I think the other thinner I used was lacquer thinner and was compatible with the primer I am using?

Can someone tell me if this is what happened?

If it's a two part primer, then you have to spray the second step before you get the final product.
