Maybe he died.
I'd really like to see if it was ever finished, I work at a Mazda dealer and could get my hands on a new console for a better price (unless you can get a really good one in a junkyard).

Its ok, if I come across a RX8 center console, you bet your a$$ I'll be doing this mod!
Re: A little preview of my new center console...
You guys are ridiculous. Every one of you is afraid to try something new and claim how you don't wanna ruin the "look" of your third gen, but whenever someone DOES do something new, like this you all flock in to say how great.
Take a tape measure to the junk yard and see what fits your car. It's that simple people.
Do a little research.

I just love seeing great projects like that... I'll be the first to admit that my fabricating skills are lacking and my patience is well below the necessary level.

Easy tiger, I don't even own my third gen any more. I just thought it was cool and remembered this post from years ago when I used to post more frequently. If there's something wrong with that, please let me know.
Re: A little preview of my new center console...
I've been ranting about this for over a month now. Someone needs to balance out the stock *****.
And I will continue to rant about it as long as I continue to hear words like "rice" thrown around this message board and as long as the stock ****'s continue their reign of terror, or until someone can prove to me that updating a 25 year old plus technologies, materials, or design techniques is a bad thing.

Re: A little preview of my new center console...
You are that guy. You are the guy that HATES all the people he shares a common interest with. You probably hate me too lol. Here's the thing though guy, you're on a forum where people can say and do what they want. You want to keep your third gen all stock and original? I say go for it. You want to make it looking like the starship enterprise inside? I say go for it, or in your case, you wanna be a self hating MF'er, I say go for it. That's it for me.
Nothing's perfect.
And... Sometimes sh*t just gets old.
When I go to a car show with my dad.. we look at all the stock restoration cars, and you know what? The first couple times you see a mint restored '66 impala, or '57 chevy or whatever car you want to pull out of your bag, it's kinda cool. After you see about 5 or 6 mint restored '57 Chevy's? You think... boring. The coolest cars at car shows? The unique ones. those are the ones _I_ take pictures of. Hell, some of the most interesting cars I've seen in my life were rusty old rat rods. But they were neat looking and unique.
I took pictures of the stock restoration Grand Nationals for my buddy at Summit Supershow last year because he likes them. I took about 5 pictures. The other pictures I took? The Volkswagon with the custom VW logos in the striping... The pickup truck with the motor in the bed... the flamed Chevy Silverado with the airbag suspension and the trick bridge in the bed. The old rat rod pickup truck with the beer keg for a fuel tank, the Nova with the strut tower suspension built to look like stock... I could keep going.
Stock is boring. Quit trying to pay homage to GM's 30 year old ideas and come up with your own.

The only "interest" I share with these people is I like the exterior body of the camaro. Doesn't matter though. Just because I like it doesn't mean I don't think it can be improved on.

Re: A little preview of my new center console...
There ya go. And that should be enough.
I sold my camaro 6 years ago. I've said that before. I only post here to help other posters. What does my car have to do with anything? Hoping to call me a hipocrite? That'd be productive.
Mathius
And btw, where are your custom interior pics?

Nah, you just have bad grammar, but that's not a crime. You saying that anyone who doesn't want to modify is wrong is actually counter productive to this forum though now that you bring it up.

Re: A little preview of my new center console...
It looks good. I rather like it myself. But right now i am going to do mine a little different. Find a console i like. SO wish this guy would show his finished work. But eh. i always love modding my camaro. Will head to the junk yard sometime and will post a new thread and finish the car. Once i find a console i like i will show and see what you guys think.
Re: A little preview of my new center console...
I didn't say anything about anyone who "doesn't want to modify" being wrong. The difference is, I have a problem with the ones who hate on the people who DO want to modify.
I encourage modification.
It's in no way counter productive, because I provided two excellent resources to help people who want to think outside the box, as well as the basic idea behind what this guy did: Take a tape measure and go to a junk yard, instead of posting "will this work?"

Re: A little preview of my new center console...
Why?
This thread isnt going anywhere. If someone happens to get another console like this...I certainly think a new thread would be in order. Everytime this thread gets bumped I get excited thinking maybe someone finished it...but all I see is back and forth stuff.

Never driven an automatic camaro...but what if you miss Drive? since theres no markers or anything. Just sayin but other then that it looks great! I prefer the stock dash and center console though, I like its square somewhat industrial look with the star screws and stuff. Also, I assume the rear seats dont fold down anymore? Seems useful but i geuss it is a muscle car so what good are folding back seats.

Re: A little preview of my new center console...
i know this is an old thread and the guy will probably never come back.
but instead of starting a new thread i figured i would revive this old one.
the pictures the original guy posted no longer work so i was wondering if anyone saved any of them or had some pics of a Mazda console. i was also wondering how well it fit and how far back it went.
one more question does anyone know of any other center consoles that would fit in third gens i know about the fourth gen consoles and i don't think they look rite and there a hackneyed mod like the 4th gen dash. also would either the Mazda console or whatever console anyone else may suggest look good with a 2nd gen dash.

that guy hasn't been on tgo in 2 years or so and the site he used to host the pictures is no longer showing them so we will probably not get to see the original pics. but maybe some one else will post other Mazda console pics.

I don't have the pics, but the console went all the way back to the rear seatbacks, fit pretty good too. here's a pic i got from a google image search. If you get one with the seat heaters, then you have a great place to put your window switches.

edit: when i switch to power windows i plan to put switches on the doors. i got a set from a mid 80's suburban that i think would look good but thats not gonna happen for a while but for people that want to leave the switches where they are thats a good idea.

Well, looks like the E-brake is on the right side, though I think he was working on exact fitment before he went AWOL. All I know is what is posted in this thread, so just read the text, do image searchs. here's another view that shows where the shifter/e-brake sit. I think everything fit way better than it had a right to, but there was a lot of trimming that needed to be done, especially on the underside.

Re: A little preview of my new center console...
Its not just trimming... You have to build the entire bottom side of the console. That console is just a top basically. You have to build sides, and make a structure, then attach the top part down.
Really...what this is going to take... is for someone else to grab a mazda console and take up where this kid left off. There IS NO MORE help on this. What you see in this thread is as far as anyone has gotten. So grabbing a console and making it work, and finishing it, would make whoever did it a pioneer.
This kid got far enough with this console that if I didnt like my 4th gen console so much, I would def try it. Because that mazda console looked great in there. But since my 4th gen console fits so nice and works so well, and is so easy to remove/replace...I wont be getting rid of it anytime soon. Plus...no one sits in the back so there is no reason to have it extend that far for me.
Who wants to step up and just buy a console? have this thread locked, start a new one, and dont disappear 1/2 way through!! haha

Man I'm amazed how this thread keeps coming back with no updates, thanks for the pictures, it just shows how popular console updates are wanted for our cars!
