I ran across this post looking to see how to do a head liner. I was amazed to see how detailed and custom your work is! Speechless!

I love the c6 handles! What switch did you end up going with for your exterior door handles to pop the door? Just out of curiousity I looked for oem or replacement c6 switches and came up with nothing.

I used a BMW trunk switch. It is concealed with a rubber cover. I believe I looked up a 2006 BMW M3 external rear trunk switch.

This looks familiar... Neil, that car better not be 87% of the way done sitting in the garage untouched for the last year, while you work on new projects and/or businesses! I've been there far too many times...

If you're in need of some motivation, read through this thread beginning to end:
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/body...one-phase.html

And not to be "that guy" but umm... you haven't posted new pictures since jan of 2010. We need something new to minimize suspiciously when our wives/girlfriends(boyfriends?) walk into the room.

No contest. Niel's is better. Niels is everything a thirdgen was, but better. Its tastefully done as well with some of the mods like the widened rear end not very obvious.

The F87 on the otherhand is a thirdgen in a clown suit with a nuke missile. Yeah, its got the muscle, and its got a ton of fabrication skills wrapped up in it, but its just got no taste.

it doesnt matter what engine they put in the F87 itll still be slow from all that steel, an iron duke pulling a motorcycle trailer would be faster

Glad to hear that...I wish I lived closer, I'd be happy to give him a hand in finishing the beast. (Although I'd be learning more than helping).

Re: Phase I done, Phase II-interior almost done, and now Phase III-drivetrain (454 LS

Hey guys, all is good! As 1bad91z said, I have been busy with work but getting back to the car as I do want to finish the ole beast up!!!

So, I think the title of this thread indicates I am in Phase 3-drivetrain BUT actually I am now in the next phase, we'll call it 'Phase-STUPID' as I clearly have lost my mind. To give you a quick summary, John and I noticed some frame rail issues which would require a lot of strengthening as well as the rear passenger quarter panel was not aligned properly at the body shop discussed earlier on in this post.....not going to bring up names at this point...i'm over it, so no questions on this topic please you guys will put me on antidepressants if you do . After realizing there were significant structural issues I threw around ideas of repairing them or buying a new-used solid shell (John was in favor of a new body)....after teetering back and forth, found a good body 91Z for $400 Still, I was not happy, because I had to tear down that car...oh and I just finished stripping mine down....motor, trans, rear-end, gas tank, interior, etc.... are all OUT. Yep, you read it correctly, back to square one, sort of although this time, this muthr fkr will be gawd damn solid!!!! Yes, i know i need my head examined. The 'donor Z' is just about ready for media/soda blasting and the plan is to clip the front end (firewall forward) and put some solid rails in along with a C6 style front suspension with rack-n-pinion. Will keep you guys posted with new pics.

Now hit me with questions/comments, whatcha got?

Fixed it for ya. Smartest thing youve done yet on this build. Id buy you a beer or five and tell you about my past experiences. Moral of the story is.... Start with a solid car and all ends well.

Besides look at it this way. No one builds the exact same car twice. You did a mock up of the body and saw what was right and what needed tweaking and NOW your getting the chance to make that reality happen. Plus its damn nice to see the honesty in what your doing and why. I salute you bro

If you ever need a skilled wrench to help polish it off send a plane ticket and i'll be your helper

Neil,

Glad you're back on the board and thanks for the update.

Do you plan on widening the rear quarters on the new body? (That was one of my favorites parts of the build because of how the 335s tucked.) Or is it too much in the way of alignment issues, i ask because I really want to do the same thing to my car. But if you suggest it isn't worth doing then I will abandon the idea. Thanks.

Damn Neil, I can't imagine tearing that car apart again and basically starting over. I have thrown in the towel several times on my car because of stupid issues, and they were minor compared to what you have on your hands. I applaud your tenacity and look forward to seeing this project done!

I agree. you have incredible patience! I want to give up on my ground up build because now i am swapping over to a FAST XFI 2.0 system and then my trans is leaking and dont want to pull it out now. huge PTIA but sounds like you are in a deeper hole.

Goodluck and keep the pics rolling. You are doing some amazing stuff here.

Wow Neil I cannot believe your having to start over. As others have said you have now worked out the kinks and should be able to move directly to your goal. Congrats on not throwing the towel in and just buying a ZR1 or something.

So I gotta ask... What is happening with the old body??? Will there be an add in the for sale section

Wow! Starting with a new shell eh? Way back when you started this thread I wondered about the use of an Ontario shell when I saw the amount of repair you had to do to it (post #42). We all do the same thing though, sometimes we learn in the process. I'm working on a 70 Firebird that I should have left where I found it. Yeah, it's an Ontario car too and although the frame rails are solid I have quarters, floors and more to fix on it. A southern shell wouldn't have been much more money and a lot less work.

Looking forward to following your new directions with the project.

Will you continue to update this thread or are you going to be starting a new one? I'm excited to see how the new project turns out.

Yes, The car had way too much cancer and structurally it was unsound .The owner didnt want the liability of selling or giving the car away and having a issue down the road....Just not worth the risk....

Re: Phase I done, Phase II-interior almost done, and now Phase III-drivetrain (454 LS

I can't believe I made it through 2044 posts. longest thread Ive ever been through by a longshot. epic car man - or, Biblical? I'm in love with that intake manifold. I'm throwing around ideas of building either an LS or LT motor when I graduate. LS is better but the go fast goodies are just so much more expensive, who knows. sucks to hear your body is garbage after painting it but now you know it'll be done right. I've read so much I could probably write a books worth of comments on all the stuff I've seen here but I won't.

One thing I will say; however, is I noticed you flaring the brake lines. you said you were using stainless? Stainless is supposed to be single flared at 37* (as opposed to double 45* double flared non-stainless steel lines). obviously this is because of the material properties of stainless, it can't really handle the deformation. chances are this is why you had a hard time flaring the lines in the first place AND more importantly, its quite likely the reason behind your mysterious leaks. - well, that's my diagnosis anyways with what info I have. if you haven't built up your new car, maybe this is the a nice opportunity to flare the stainless lines correctly.

Props to you man, can't wait to see the new car - and throw in some info when you tune the car, I find tuning these days with computers pretty sweet, would love to see what you do with her.

Why cut it up . Anything is fixable. This reminds me of of Tiger Wood's ex wife demolishing her 12 million dollar house because of termites.

i would have bought the body in one piece for more than you got for it at the scrapyard. not to mention he fact the effort and money in supplies to cut it apart.
