what is the difference?

Ok so my girlfriend went to buy me some new center caps for my 1988 camaro SC and she went to get them on ebay. The problem is that the person who sold her them said they would fit a 1988 but they were listed as 1987 and well ya they dont fit. so onto the question, why dont they fit? or is there a difference between center caps or rims? basically i just need the information about what caps will fit and what wont and why could be nice too.

Thank you to all that can help me

Standard 15 inch aluminum wheels, 15 or 16 inch IROC wheels, steel rally wheels? Lots of possibilities here.
