Rust converter or undercoating

Someone told me that I can apply rust converter underneath my car to help prevent it from rusting out on me, is that true? I thought that undercoating was really the only way to solve that problem.

How bad is the rust?

Buy some POR-15.

Re: Rust converter or undercoating

The rust coverter works very good on surface rust. If the rust has already pitted the metal, the metal needs replaced.

Undercoating wont stop the rust, it only hides, or prevents it before it starts.

The proper way to do it is to get under there with a wire wheel and a sander, clean off as much rust as possible, then prep and coat the area with POR-15 (or similar product) as per their instructions.

Re: Rust converter or undercoating

It only looks like surface rust to me. My mechanic said that he noticed the rocker panels are starting to rust so he said to definitely take care of those before they get any worse. The weather has been nicer so I will get under there as soon as possible. Thanks for your help.

Re: Rust converter or undercoating

POR-15 is not supposed to be used in sunlight. It is UV sensitive. If the outside of your rocker panels are starting to go a body shop and get them repainted.
