Installing Aero Ground effects on my 84
Installing Aero Ground effects on my 84
Been searching the forum, but didn't get a clear answer on this.
I'm going to put the 91/92 style ground effects on my 84 (still need to get the front and rear bumpers anyone in Washington have some for sale?).
But I do have the skirts and door effects now. My first question is for the door, how do you know where to drill the holes? I'm a little nervous about drilling the holes in the door, and then find out that I have them all up too hight, or offset wrong so the door effect doesn't line up with the skirt etc. Anyone have any tips on how to get it right? Anyone have any closeup pics of the skirts and door effects?
My next question is on the skirts, been just playing around with to see how they would look. I've noticed that the skirt doesn't want to fit between the door gap (not sure if I'm describing that right) It's almost like it's too long by just a hair? If I force it I'm afraid it will break, or warp it then the door won't shut. I thought that maybe the front fender needed to be adjusted forward a tad, but then everything looks right, and I've never had a problem with anything on that side of the car. So not sure if that's it, or something else?
any suggestions or tips?
Thanks
Chris.

Re: Installing Aero Ground effects on my 84
you have to position the body pannels in the right location which means alot of little adjustments. consider the project the same way you would attack a rubicks cube... excuse the spelling.
you'll need new bumper covers front and rear and new front fenders or you'll have to slot the fenders to fit the gfx. not easy but not overly complex either.

Thanks,
Ya knew about the front and rear bumper skins, been having a hard time finding any around here. Hopefully I can locate some soon, I want to get started on this.
Ya I was affraid the fitment would be a trial and error type of thing. The door ones I'm a little worried about becuase there are so many studs on it, that needs holes drilled.

If all you want to change are the nose and hood, the only other piece you will need is the front gfx piece from an 85-90 car. It's not necessary to change the side GFX or rear bumper cover.

Re: Installing Aero Ground effects on my 84
cdoyle- I went through the same thing with my 83. I swapped all the gfx for the 91-92 style. I had to drill new holes for pretty much all the gfx. You pretty much just have to place the piece into position to figure out where to drill the holes. It's not hard at all, just take your time and go one by one and everything should line up nicely. It's definetly worth it in the end

Thanks for the tips on installing these, I think I may have found the bumpers today so hopefully I can get this all started soon!

Re: Installing Aero Ground effects on my 84
Hi,
Found a guy finally that had a rear bumper, but just want to make sure this is a 91/92 style bumper and rear GFX.
http://chris.caraudiocentral.net/images/bumper.jpg
The only reason I'm wondering is because the pics of the front of the car had the older style front chin (without the scoops)
Thanks

Re: Installing Aero Ground effects on my 84
OK, found a front bumper cover today, so going to take my old one off.
I got all the bolts across the top, and the plastic push things across the bottom.
Now where the bumper is bolted to the fender, it looks like there are 6 nuts holding it on. How do you get to those? Do you have to take the headlight bar off? or is there some way to get down in there?
I can't even get my hand in there, so not sure how to get to those.

Re: Installing Aero Ground effects on my 84
I just pulled the nose, off my 84 Z28 today. I found it easy to get to those nuts from underneath the car. I guess you could pull the headlight buckets out but really no need to, as they will come off still attached to the nose.
There were 3 bolts on each side of the buckets that i took out. Then 2 nuts in the center of the nose under the plastic cover around the hood latch.
Then 4 bolts on each side where it connects to the end of the frame section.
Just unhook the lights and it will pull right off in one piece.
I have little arms so reaching up in there with a gear wrench was no problem. the hardest one to get to was the very top at the corner of the bumper cover next to the headlight. But it wasnt to bad.
I must say that i had my fenders off too, so that gave extra room also.
Just put the front on jackstands and lay under it and you will see.
Dont gotta pull the fenders off , but taking out the fender liners outta be a help.
Only reason i happened to have the fenders off is im gonna change the door pins and bushings and it just makes life a little easier with em off in my opinion.

Re: Installing Aero Ground effects on my 84
hmm, taking the inner fenders off, I'll have to see if that helps.
I tried going from under the car, but there is nowhere to go! I couldn't even see the bolts from there.
The rear fender was so easy, was hoping this would be a 15 minute thing too.

Re: Installing Aero Ground effects on my 84
there are 2 plastic panels under each side, they have some of the plastic push pin retainers and 1 regular bolt attaching them. I took the bolt off and then pulled the plastic panels down and let em hang there. then you should be able to see up inside there.
there may be a more simple way to get to em, but that is what worked for me with no problems.

Gonna pick up my body pieces saturday and begin puttin mine back together.
Very nice work on the website you have with pics and all. Wish i had done that, still might myself.
On the plastic trim, where did you get the paint to redo all that?

Thanks, it's a project I've always wanted to do. So thought I would try and make it easy for anyone else wanting to do it.
Have a lot of plans for this car in my mind, really looking forward to getting to start on the audio part
I got the paint from here
http://www.sjdiscounttools.com/manuf...em-paints.html
I also used the sandfree too, suppose to make it adhere to the plastic better.

Another question,
On the skirts,
toward the end (by the scoop) on the back side there is a little tab. Is that tab suppose to go through the body of the car, and have a clip that holds it in place?
Or is that tab just there for a support? and not meant to go through a cutout?

Re: Installing Aero Ground effects on my 84
I forgot how its held in place but that rear part is definetly attached to the body. I remember because I had to take out interior panels to get access to it. Either a clip holds that tab in place or a bracket goes through the body and is secured by a nut.

Re: Installing Aero Ground effects on my 84
Yeah im pretty sure it uses a small bracket.
Re: Installing Aero Ground effects on my 84
Have yet another question regarding these ground effects.
I've removed most the paint with the SEM bumper paint remover, and now started sanding by hand any that it wouldn't get off.
Do I need to get every spec of old paint off these? or just sand it until it's smooth? I've started sanding the spots with 120grit, and I also have 220 grit.
How rough/smooth should these be for painting?

Hmm wish I could help you out with that one but I don't know much about body work lol. Maybe post a new thread specifically about that if no one replys in here.
Re: Installing Aero Ground effects on my 84
Hey, can someone post a picture of how the GFX mounts inside the door jam?
Is there suppose to be a bracket that goes along the bottom of the door jam? or does the GFX mount right to the car?

Re: Installing Aero Ground effects on my 84
Is this right?
I installed the door piece today, and noticed that the bottom GFX seems to 'stick' out further?
Then the door piece? Is that how it's suppose to be?
I have the bottom piece pushed all the way to the door sill, so I can't move that in anymore?
Seems like the two should be flus with each other when the door is closed? Is the door piece suppose to be pushed out more?

Re: Installing Aero Ground effects on my 84
You can try looking in the classifieds here, I see them there every once in awhile, but shipping gets expensive on the large pieces.
I've been checking out craiglist for my area, and anytime I see someone parting out a Camaro, I email them to see if they have what I need.
I still need to get a front bumper cover and the front 91/92 style chin.

Re: Installing Aero Ground effects on my 84
I don't think I do, is it part of the GFX?
Anyone have a pic of it? Seems like if it pushes out anymore, the 2 end studs on the door piece won't be long enough to put a nut on.

Here ya go, it's alway's something huh? I've since sandblasted this piece and will show you a better pic tommorrow.
Re: Installing Aero Ground effects on my 84
hmm,
How does that attach to the door GFX?
I thought the studs on the GFX went through the door and attached that way?
I don't see where the studs attach to that?

Re: Installing Aero Ground effects on my 84
OK, looking at your pic again. I do have this piece (I think)
It was just attached to the GFX.
It's this right.

If it is, I'm still unsure why they don't line up.
Also where the studs go through the door, why are the studs on each end so much shorter? When mounted there isn't enough of the stud pushing through, for the nut to screw on too.

Well your gfx piece looks fine, its right. Im not sure why its not lining up. I just checked mine out and everything is pretty even. Do you have this problem on the other side too?
Re: Installing Aero Ground effects on my 84
ya I can't figure it out. I can't push the lower GFX in anymore, and even if I could pull the door out more, then the studs won't go through the door.

Do you have any clearance issues with the gfx. Like do they rub together when you close/open the door?

Re: Installing Aero Ground effects on my 84
hmm the only thing i can think of is that maybe those little tabs are causing the problem. I think they are what pushes the gfx out to make it flush with the bottom piece. The tabs are supposed to be sitting flush against the door. Maybe check that out.
Re: Installing Aero Ground effects on my 84
the 2 center tabs, are going under the lip of the door. While all the others are resting against it. So I'll try fixing that and see if that helps.
sure hope I don't have to drill anymore holes in the door!!

Re: Installing Aero Ground effects on my 84
Hey,
could someone post a closeup pic of the skirt and the door GFX with the door closed.
I did the other side today, and there is more of a gap between the 2 then there is on the other side. And I'm not sure which one looks right!
So before I do anything else, I want to see how it's suppose to look
