Hood shocks - What am i missing ?

Hi everybody !

I ordered and installed a pair of Strong Arm 4422 Hood shocks and the hood doesn't stay up more than with my old and worm shocks. Am i missing something for the hood to stay up ?

I looked at some underhood pics on this board, and i didn't see any additionnal springs between the 2 pairs of hood pivots. maybe there is a circular spring somewhere that i am missing.

Could anybody guide me ? Maybe a pic would be helpful.

thank you very much !

All I can say is be sure you ordered the correct shocks.

The steel hoods on most thirdgen's weigh an awful lot (50-80lbs?), while the aluminum T/A and Formy hoods weigh about 1/3 of that. Perhaps you mistakenly received the shocks for the al. hood ?

The 4422 shocks are indeed the ones for the steel hood, but the shocks themselves are not identified, only the bag, so yeah it could be anything in the 4422 bag... that's sad

I ordered a set of hood shocks off ebay for 28.95 plus shipping ( link to auction )

sold by ez-parts . . .genuine Stabilus hood shocks - they work better than the day I bought the car.

I know this doesn't help much -- but if you were to return the ones you received you might find these are a better replacement.

Aluminum t/a and formy hoods?

I've seen fiberglass camaro hoods that were suposedly stock, but never an alum hood.. Dang, learn something new every day!

There are no other springs dude. Either you got bad shocks, which can happen, or the wrong parts.

Yep, aluminum hoods were on every 82-83 T/A with functional cowl induction that I have seen. The one I have couldn't weigh more than 25-30 lbs.

I may be mistaken about the late model formy's -- they look similar enough, but I've never actually checked it out.

Hrmm. The ones I had were all steel. If I had an alum one, I'd be happy as can be.. alum is worth a lot these days.

Hmmmm...my Z28 w/blisters is a heavy hood. I don't know the weight but only a good or new pair of lifts will work on them. I bout a set of Mighty Lifts for $20 each. Work like a charm.

my Daytona Turbo hood is much lighter and can work on older or used shocks just fine.

Re: Hood shocks - What am i missing ?

Most part stores carry the "shocks" for the hood. I bought mine at advance 4 years ago and they are still holding. Put them on in the parking lot so I knew the worked. I think they were then around 25-30 bucks but well worth not having to put a pair of vice grips on the old shock to hold up the hood every time I needed to work on it.

I always get mine from the junkyard. They charge 2 bucks apiece for hood or hatch shocks.Best part is that you never get bad ones cause you can already see them at work.I grab them whenever I can
