custom rims
I have 315mm tires going on my 89 IROC with custom rims. The problem is that I've lost and forgotten my info. What is the bolt pattern and backspacing on the 89 IROC?
Thanks.

I could be wrong, but I belive all F bodies have 5 x 4 3/4 bolt pattern. Not sure about the backspacing.

Re: custom rims
Niel stretched his rear quarters out, 1.5" IIRC, "massaged" the inners AND notched his LCAs. In order words, short of back-halving the car, as you would for a Pro Streeter, it won't happen. Especially under the stock rear quarters.

Re: custom rims
I have the same outlook IROC-Z_Racing. I am trying to get 315s in there too. I am acctually currently running 335s that stick out, simply because the tires where practically given to e by a Viper owner. I would have preferred 315s. But i am running 2" spacers on replica Corvette ZR-1 rims. I just had to hammer the wheel well to get them to now hit on the inside. The 335s bubble, so I am just fixing other things on the car now since I have little $, but by next week I am gonna order a new set of Nitto 555R tires. Then I will install them and machine down my 2" spacer to probably 1.5". Somewhere around there. This will make the 315s tuck to just wider than stock. Which in my eyes is the best fit. I really hate the look of stock width rear tires in terms of where they sit. They are just too deep in there.
On a side note, my 335 set-up is just too wide, but when I take it to shows I get nothing but compliments on it, people love the stick out, steam roller look. I tell them that I am getting rid of it and I swear to you I always get told " Well thats cool, but it looks real badas now, you should leave it" I am def not going to leave it, but just food for thought.
If those don't work, go here.

found a better one. Here you can acctualy see the "meats"

Re: custom rims
Thanks dennis! That's cool. Yeah I'm the same way, I saw it was done before on an 86 IROC that had had bought many years ago with 315s and the tires never did stick out or bump and rub the inside wheel well. Now about the spacer. That is a new part to me. I've been running around checking out rims for the right backspacing and rim width, bolt pattern, etc... and now I hear about spacers. I saw that you mentioned that a 1.5" spacer will set the wheels just wider than stock. So should I be looking for a 1.5" spacer to get it done right? I like the pics. A clean, sleek camaro! Thanks!

Re: custom rims
The tires I'm looking at are the Goodyear Eagle F1. Superior dry traction and wet traction. ZR rated for over 186mph!!! And I also found a website that carries the larger than stock chrome IROC rims. This store is special though. You know how all the aftermarket replica IROC rims are always the "1-Line" IROC rim, what I call the 2nd generation IROC rim, well this store has the "2-Line" rim, the first IROC rim! So I'm trying to see if they will custom machine 4 for me to fit the specifications of the F1's!!! Here's what I mean by 1-Line and 2-Line rims:
1-Line:
2-Line:
I think the 2-Line looks WAY better than the 1-Line IROC rims.

Re: custom rims
Well if I were you I would still go with a 2" spacer out back. If you want go to skule.com's website. He has all kinds of charts and stuff to help you out. If you are having custom rims made, then you don't need spacers, you just need the right specs for the dealer. I had to use spacers cuz I went the cheap route and got corvette rims. Since the corvette has different back spacing than the camaro, you need spacers. They are acctually billet adapters. The good thing about the addapters is that if you want to try to move your tires in a little, like I am doing, you can machine them down, and they don't cost all that much. I would never wanna machine down a rim.
But getting custom rims is the best way to do things if you wanna do it right. Go to skules website, google it. You will find a ton of info on how to stuff these things under there. Then you will have to use that data to tell the rim company what you want done.
Those tires you are looking at are pretty expensive, I don't know what you plan to do with the car or what you budget is, but don't forget you can get a flat and the tire is ruined. I want my car to go straight real fast and be able to turn well. I don't drive fast in the rain, so I don't care too much about wet traction. I am getting 315/35/17 Nitto 555Rs for the back and 275/40/17 Nitto 555RIIs for the front.
Best combo, right price and very sticky. Good luck and hope that I helped.

Re: custom rims
Or, instead of the spacers, you could do a 4th gen rear swap.
You would get discs, if you currently have drums, or larger discs, if you currently have discs. Possibly a posi, if you buy the right 4th gen one. They are a direct bolt-in, no mods needed.

Re: custom rims
I picked up a catalog at at a car show from their trailer, and there was a kit that I could order for 3rd, but there was not a whole lot of info on it. The page had 1st and 2nd gen and as a little note saying they could make a 3rd gen tub kit, but I suspeect it would be highly expensive though.

Re: custom rims
I asked them, they don't make the rims normally that wide, and they said that they could not make custom sizes (i don't see why not) but, anyways, it's back to square one with that idea. Actually, I've been thinking about going with a moddest 255 tires for now instead of my stupid stock 215's, and that means no modification to the body or suspension.

Re: custom rims
Don't listen to all this crap that 315s don't fit. Man up, do a little hammering back there, get some 1.5" spacers (if running vette rims) and toss them on. My rims are 11" wide and I run 315s DRs. They are 100% flush with the outside edge of the flare EXACTLY how I want it. Others want the tire to sit in from where the flare is. I hate that. My fronts are the same. 275 that sit FLUSH with the flare. Makes the car look FULL of tire
Wish I had better pics to show you, but you get the idea.

Now when you say hammering, you mean the inside wheel well? I don't want to be wacking away at something that I can't fix! Thanks for that dennis. Yeah I like where the tire sits under the flare. My thought is this, I like to have at least a look of the same tire width all the way around, but I doubt I can "easily" fit 315's in the front, or is there an easy fix? Is there a tire size that when put onthe front, is hard to tell that it is thinner than the 315's in the back?

Re: custom rims
275's
They are pretty damn wide for a front tire. If you want, run a front 275 and a read 295. There is now way to put a 315 up front so don't even let that thought pass though your mind.
The hammering is not breaking the car. I could have given a monkey a hammer and said "hit the bumps!" And he would do a good job. You aren't breaking anything, it would be very very hard to break something back there. Go to my CD site, I have pics of it all. All you do is hammer away the bumps. I went ahead and cut them out. I also used a propane torch to soften the metal and have it more faster and with less effort. Don't be scared of modding your car. If you are you will never end up with the car the way you want it.
When you look at my car, the tires look to be the same width since they both meet the flare flush. Is that what you want?

Oh no I'm not scared to modify the car, I was just wondering about where to hammer. I've modded several cars that are my own, such as a 76 Cosworth Vega, and 86 IROC (that was automatic) and an 04 chevy suburban, so I'm not scared to pop the hood and change things around. That's all I meant.
Thanks for the tip!!!

Re: custom rims
Oh then in that case you will find this mod one of the easiest. No wrench, no bolts, no nothing. Just a hammer. I had my rim and kept slipping it on and off to find out where it was going to hit. Then I marked it and happered away. You really can't mess up, under the rolls of metal is the rear frame, Your hammer no matter how big will bounce off that. Just mash all the rolls up against the coil pocket OR you can cut the side of the coil pocket off and be pretty much done getting the rim to fit. Once you add the tire you will see that the font part of the well needs some stretching to fit the tire.

With some more work, maybe a coil-over conversion, or wider fenders, I think its possible.

I have that pic too. I guess within the world we live in it is never.
I don't think any of us are making a complete front clip from scratch.... I have pics of 3rd gens doing wheelies so hard that all 4 tires come off the ground. I would still say it is impossible to make a 3rd gen fly

Hey dennis,
I know this does not pertain to the thread topic, but I noticed on you CD site, you installed switches. Is that for the ignition system? If so, how did you go about wiring them in to the ignition? Second, how did you make your new dash bezel, i.e. measurements, cutlines, gauge holes, etc...? Thanks and damn you've put A LOT of work into that ride. Awsome stuff!

Re: custom rims
OK, let me start with the switches.
They control a few things.
1-N20 Purge
2-N20 arming
3-Pours bleach out over my rear tires to do small but impressive smoke shows. haha.
The 2 in the middle just control the wiper speeds since I am not using the stock wiring.
The entire car is wired with a painless kit as you can see from the pics.
Now for the gauges. They were fun. I spent a lot of time drawing different ideas on napkins, folders whater I had around me when I had a few minuutes of free time. I decided what I wanted to do and installed the dash with now gauge bezel.
Then I put a piece of paper over the void behind the steering wheel and cut it to fit sorta in the hole and then traced that onto a piece of cardboard. I trimmed that till it got to be the right size to fit the hole. I would worry about fastening down later.
Then I looked for products in my house that had 5" bases and 2 5/8" bases. The sizes of the gauges. After that I measured the crap out of the shape that I had so that I could find the center and do all the geometric measurments so that everything was square, level, evenly spaced and all. Took about 3 or 4 TV shows worth of sitting in front of the TV with a ruler, haha. Finally when I was happy with the circles, I drilled holes in the to insert a small saw and cut them out by hand. Test fit the gauges, perfect. Sprayed the part with fabric glue, then layed the fabric over the part let it dry and then cut the holes out of the fabric.
Re insert the gauges and there you have it.
The blinkers and high beam indicator are just small holes drilled for marker lights that I got from summit.
Thats it. Anymore Qs feel free to ask. Oh and I have absolutly no training in any of this. i made it up as I went.

Re: custom rims
Cool, Cool. Yeah, pretty much the things I do, I learn as I go. I'm basically making my IROC into a Pro-Touring version. It looks classy, elegant, and stock on the outside, but the interior and under the hood are gonna be flashy and a pure beast! I like what you have done with that one of yours. And might I say, I would have been knocking down some walls in a garage that small so I could have room for all the "junk in the trunk" shall we say, from my car to fit in there! Nice. Oh, and the video on you smoking the tires in a parking lot, that bleach really does the trick, don't it? Thanks for the info.

Re: custom rims
Thats what i used. The old washer fluid bottle. I just wanna put it someplace outside the car so I don't have to worry about bleach fumes in the car. Not sure where I am going to try and put it. Right now I jsut have water in there to test the system.

Re: custom rims
Well, DES followed up with another email response...
"Thanks for emailing us Steve. We don’t carry a Mini-Tub kit for the 3rd Gen, nor do we have any plans to do so in the near future. We did a one-off Deep Tub for Hawks Third Gen, but we made a special piece for them. If we do offer anything it would be years from now.

Re: custom rims
Ok Stephen, thanks, I must have read wrong then in the magazine. But anyways... Oh well. Hey I've posted a thread on the exhaust portion of the forums, but nobody has ever responded. My question is this, where can I find the corsa pro-series single and double 3.5" and 4" tips? All I ever find is the entire exhaust system. Yes, I know this is not the topic for this thread, but I am just trying to get my point across. Thanks.
