Spoiler Question

----------

----------
The original owner of my 87 Commemorative let the car sit in the sun from 1987 to 1990, before it went into long term storage. The wing has some evidence of sun damage and I want to have it professionally restored with the orignial lacquer pain. Can anyone recommend a shop that can professionally restore the IROC's spoiler?

Re: Spoiler Question

As far as i know the type of paint used is now illegal, but they can redo it with something different with the same results, it would probably cost 100 bucks for just the spoiler to do.

Re: Spoiler Question

IIRC DuPont still makes a laquer paint. Don't quote me though.
Lacquer paint, and primer is quite inferior in quality compared to the acrylics and urethanes for durability these days. It would be a step back, even for nostalgia sake, in time and quality to even bother with lacquer anymore these days. Not to mention finding it, finding someone to shoot it and the time involved in trying to keep it nice.

Even the factory had to ditch the lacquer after 87 or so due to EPA regs (Cali). Not to mention the problem GM had with lacquer-check issues. Seemed to be an issue on the family sedan lines, and a certain color, more than anything.

Re: Spoiler Question

Plus the new urethane paints can be polished and waxed without having to worry about it. Laquer paints didn't like wax from what I have been told.

Re: Spoiler Question

I guess the general consensus is to use a modern paint like urethane. The only concern I have is that it match the original paint perfectly with no inconsistencies. The top of the hatch needs to be painted too. Sun and black paint just don't mix well.

Does urethane paint also have a clear coat application?
