What size welding wire?

I have access to a MIG wire feed welder so I have been doing a little body work. The question is what size wire do some of you guys use when welding in patches on sheet metal? I have .030 on there now and I think its too big. I can't quite get the voltage where I want it, it's either too high and I am blowing through the metal or it seems too low and its hard to get a arc. Any tips or advice appreciated!

I would use .023 wire, you can get the heat down lower so you wont blow holes in the sheet metal

Thanks! I figured I needed smaller wire, but just was not quite sure.
