Should I stick with original color? My 87 Camaro Before/AFter Crash and at Body shop.
Here is my 1987 IROCZ before and after the collision and then after the new front clip was put on it and some of the body work was done. I am getting a different hood (a brand new one) than the one that is on it now because it is too damaged and looks lousy. I am seriously considering GM Charcoal Metallic for the exterior color, but maybe I should go with the original color. I will post pictures of it when it is finally done. It's been in the shop for over two months now, waiting to get finished.
I chopped the damaged front clip off with a sawzall (that was fun)! I salvaged the fans, motors, and smaller hardware. I also salvaged the hood inserts and have painted them flat black, and they look brand new. Those suckers cost $125.00 apiece! I had to get another radiator and condensor (we need AC down here in Arizona). You can see in the last few pictures where there is some rust damage. This will all be gone, and the car should look gorgeous! I cannot wait to see it done!

Re: My Camaro Before Crash, After Crash, and In the Body Shop
Looks better than it did, for sure. Crashing sucks.
The body guy was gonna charge me $400.00 to paint the front clip, bumper cover, and hood, and he told me it would be an additional $495.00 to paint the rest of the car, so I said, "Well, shoot, let's just paint the whole car then!"
The body work to get the dings and rust out was only $550.00. That's not too bad. I am pretty good at body work myself, but I just don't have the time right now.
I think it will be very nice in Charcoal Metallic with no more dings, rust or blemishes.
I am anxious to see it done!

Nice car, well it was, and it will be again!! nice choice in color but it seriously decreases the resale value if you change colors. plus its gonna be marroon under the hood not grey. it will look odd. but if thats what you like then thats the most important part. i have a 1987 iroc as well. with minor dings and dents. i got quoted 4200.00 to redo mine. thats a damn good price you got. wish i could get something that low. i would redo mine for sure!! good luck!!

Re: My Camaro Before Crash, After Crash, and In the Body Shop
Thanks Guys!
I'm gonna get the underhood painted, when I swap to my 383 stroker engine.
Actually, the guy who paints at this body shop can paint it Charcoal Metallic under the hood, and little or none of the maroon (GM Dark Metallic Red) will show any more. This is what he told me, anyway.
I will post pics when it's done.

Refinished my hood inserts.
I am glad I kept them from the crash! $7.04 for a can of DupliColor flat black spray paint. Just needed to sand them down a bit before spraying them.
They look as good as new!

Re: My Camaro Before Crash, After Crash, and In the Body Shop
OK, so I am thinking I might stick with the original color, after reading 1986iroc350's posting. I must admit it is a pretty nice color, unique to the IROC Z models.
I think the paint code I need to give the body shop is 74/8748--it is the code for GM Dark Red Metallic---It is weird that other websites and information sites call it Flame Red, Dark Red, and Maroon. Flame Red is a Dodge color.
Why can't they just stick with what GM calls it in their brochure from 1987, which is Dark Red Metallic?
Oh well, maybe it will look nice with the new paintjob of the original color, and I guess it would be worth more, too?

It looked nice before and I'm sure it will look even better when it's done, the original Dark Red Metallic color is unique to Iroc Zs, I'd keep it if I it were my car.

My Iroc is the same color and I repainted it the same and love it. When the sun hits it right you see a orange hue which I like myself.

I would keep it the same color also. But I am just a bit one sided.I beleive it is the best color for a car seeing how my 88 is the same color.I have also had a black 85 rock and wouldnt want another black or charcoal car again. That i def going to look good when it is finished.

I've also heard it posted as Firemist Red. My 88 is the same color. Very good color for an IROC! And yes my 89 is Bright Red (A8774). When I first bought the '88,(used) it was the first time I saw one in that color. I stopped at the brushless carwash on the way home from picking it up and there were 2 more the same color in line with me! Never saw them after that. Weird, huh? Great color you can't go wrong with it. Just my .02.

Updated!!: My Camaro Before Crash, After Crash, and In the Body Shop
OK, I finally decided on a color. Click on the link below to see an updated slide show that includes new pictures of the progress on my car. You can really see the color I chose very well on the door frame. It is GMC Red Jewel Tintcoat. I am very happy with the color, and I think it will look awesome on the entire car.
I know that the paint job is only a $1000.00 paintjob, but it will still be nicer than before, with the rust and dents and dings all gone. I can't afford a $5000.00 paintjob right now. I will just be so glad to have my car back, since it's been nearly 5 months since I put it in the shop.
I would use the "gallery view" (click it in the top right corner of the pic screen) in the slide show when the window pops up. This way, you can choose which picture to view. My baby is starting to come back together....FINALLY!! Enjoy!

Nice car, looks like it is coming back together nicely. If you don't mind, what's the name of the body shop and where is it located? I'm in Glendale and my 84 z28 could use some touch up.
Thanks,
Mike

ouch! thats too bad. atleast ur fixing it rather then let it go to the wrecker!
just remember. you get what you pay for. yeah paying $1200 is alot better than paying 4-5 grand. but u can bet ur $5000 paint will be nicer than a $1200 one. and last longer.

Thanks for the comments guys.
What do you guys think about the color? Nobody commented on it.
Did you see the pics of the door frame all painted?

Re: My Camaro Before Crash, After Crash, and In the Body Shop
Thanks! Yeah, I was very excited once I FINALLY saw some color on my car. The color looks very nice in person. The sunlight will change how light or dark the color looks, too.
I am glad I chose that color, and I cannot wait to see it on the entire car.
I thought fixing up the old inserts was a worthwhile endeavor because I only lost one nipple (or whatever you want to call it) off of each insert, when I took them off, cuz the plastic was so old I guess. I am going to be careful when I put them back on, so I don't break any more of the nipples off. I really don't want to pay $250.00 for a new set.
----------
Thanks, and you're welcome. I know how much work it is to fix up a car.
Oh, I have major plans for this car. I just need more $$$.

Re: My Camaro Before Crash, After Crash, and In the Body Shop
By the way, the underhood pictures where the car is still missing the headlight is after they shot the underhood with the ORIGINAL color.
There was some confusion, and they didn't mix up the Red Jewel Tintcoat for me. I saw it and was like, "Uh, this isn't the color I chose."
I am glad I checked on it, and I quickly informed them that it was the wrong color.
The pictures in which the car has all of its headlights is after they shot the underhood with the Red Jewel color.
Also, you guys won't believe how cheap I got some of the front end parts. Check this out:
1. Front bumper cover WITH headlights and headlight fixture: $50.00
2. Airbox: $10.00 (the kid had no clue how much this part is worth, and I didn't argue with him).
3. Front clip from Hawk's: $230.00 (plus shipping)
4. Radiator and condensor: $150.00
5. Upper and lower fan supports and one fan "Y" fixture from Hawk's: $100.00

Anyway, for anyone who wants to know, the car is in B & G Auto in Casa Grande, Arizona.
Their phone number is 520 836-0010, and the owner's name is Butch Gabriel.
He only has one guy who paints in the booth, and he only has one paint booth/room. This is probably why my car has taken forever to get done.

Updated!! My Camaro Before Crash, After Crash, and In the Body Shop
Took new pics today!!
Here is another updated slide show link of the body work pretty much done on my car, finally. I am just waiting to pick up a hood tomorrow, then I'll bring it to the body shop for them to finish.

Re: My Camaro Before Crash, After Crash, and In the Body Shop
The whole job on my car cost me $3300.00 at the shop, plus the money I spent on parts that I brought to the shop.
The shop said that the car will be painted today (ha ha, yeah right). The hood won't be painted until Monday. The owner of the shop was supposed to order me a hood because he way underestimated the front clip replacement. He never ordered a hood.
I found a used hood on CraigsList, and I picked it up two days ago. It needed some work, but it was in very nice condition, overall, especially for $80.00. Here's another updated slide show from today.

One question. If you're getting the whole car painted, why didn't you take off the marker lights, remove taillights, and anything else easily removable? While the shop is working the big stuff, you could be polishing the plastics, and repainting the smaller items like door handles and lock assembly. It would make the paint look that much better.

I am going to redo the taillights and then spray a fairly light coat of spray tint on them. I am getting brand new marker lights and signal lights, too. I think I am doing away with the fog lights altogether. I also already have all new headlights at home.
I'll make it look good.

Re: My Camaro Before Crash, After Crash, and In the Body Shop
I plan to address the taillights, locks, etc., and all the small stuff, after I get the car back. I know it will be a bit harder that way, but oh well. I prefer doing that stuff when the car is in my garage at home.

. The hood isn't quite finished yet, either. Oh well. I don't know, I just don't care about the fog lights. Just one more thing for a stupid rock to hit and break and then cost $$ to replace, especially on my roads. There are rocks flying all over the frickin' place down here in Hellizona.

Car Painted!!
Here is a new slide show showing the car still in the booth. I went back later today and forgot my camera, and it had been sanded down, and it looked SOOOO much better, and all the tape and coverings were off of it. Anyway, these pics give you some idea of the color. It is a metallic red but is hard to see in the shade. The hood is ready to be painted and should be done soon.
Enjoy!

Yep, it sure looked a lot better after it was sanded.
Night and day difference.
Wish I had brought my camera.
