Re: crome door handles...

Its possible, but chrome is too 50's-60's hot rod IMO.

I dont either. Black door handles FTW.

There is a sticker. It says "Camaro", "Firebird", or "Fuel Injection"

Re: crome door handles...

Some of the early 3rd Gens had Factory Chrome door handles. My 84 FIrebird did, along with an 84 Parts car I had. My buddies 82 also did.

PIc of my 84 Before I cleaned up the body.

Re: crome door handles...

Does anyone have any pics? I've seen a few where they replaced the stockers with some out of a newer car that is more flush. Those look pretty good.

Re: crome door handles...

Here's mine with the chrome door handles. Not too fond of it really.

On a side note, can anyone tell what was replaced on this car by the paint? lol

Edit: and now i just noticed that something was missing when I took this pic too...

Aw well, gets the point across anyways.

But yeah, I can see where the chrome handles might look good, but I don't like them at all. They look even worse in person I think. Unless there is other chrome/silver on the car, I think it just looks out of place.

Re: crome door handles...

I wonder what the car those doors came off of originally looked like...

The car they came off of was converted to looking like a 91-92 firebird, but it was an 87 or 88 I think. i guess it would look better without the gold wheels and god accents.

Re: crome door handles...

Just like any other mod, it has to match the rest of the car. Example: If you have gold rims and chrome handles then it doesn't match as well.

I took the 4th gen ones and sanded them down then polished them. So, they are polished aluminum. If they would make 4th gen handles in chrome then I would buy them. I probably have to keep polishing my handles every now and then or try some wax or clearcoat on them.

The good thing about the thirdgen chrome handles is that the indention isn't near as noticeable, at least when they are clean. Ebay has chrome thirdgen handles as well as new black 4th gen handles and its hard to beat their prices on those items.

Re: crome door handles...

Here is a pic of my project car with polished 4th gen door handles. I'm thinking about going with chrome 3rdgen ones though, just because they are chrome(less maintenance). Chrome works very well with black.

Re: crome door handles...

Not if you open the door by putting your fingers behind the door handle(the backside of the door handle). If you're are really worried about that, you could paint the back of the door handle or put thin foam padding on the backside of the door handle. I doubt its even worth worrying about though.

Re: crome door handles...

i think it looks ok.. depends on the color of your car as well... you could go the the junk yard, and look for some older oldsmobiles, buicks, etc.. they had chrome door handles, chrome inside lock tabs, and chrome visor mounts...

that's where i picked up mine... but i think the door handles only work well on dark paint with a glossy shine.... and chrome wheels.

Re: crome door handles...

You can pick up chrome door handels at any parts store. My 79 had chrome & my 78 has black.

For a 2nd gen you can. For a 3rd gen, I think OReillys is about the only one and they only carry the drivers side on the shelf for around $24. You can find both of them on ebay for around $30. Or maybe you could special order them through a parts store. They'll say on the packaging that the 2nd gen chrome ones will work for GM vehicles for up to 1990 but thats not true. I've been keeping on eye out for both chrome handles in all kinds of auto stores in 3 cities in my state and I've never seen both. It could just be my state.

And for those who don't know, 2nd gen chrome handles weren't reused in the early thirdgens. Only thirdgen and 4th gen exterior handles are interchangeable.

C5's. C5 mirror base uses 3 mounting studs and 2 of them line up with the holes used for the studs where the thirdgen mirror would mount to. The C6 mirror has the mounting studs in completely different spots and there might not be reinforcement plates in the door where the studs need to be. If you are thinking about getting them, go with C5's but a lot of grinding and time is required to get the base of the mirror perfectly flush with the skin of the thirdgen door.
