Re: flat black bird

They look unfinished to me but hey to each their own. You can get flat black in a top coat from most paint suppliers now. That way at least it will have some protection that primer would not. HTH.

I think if done right they look fantastic and a bit evil.. but that requires the complete car to be paid attention to. If done wrong you look like a bad rattle can job. Unfortunately there is not a very good in-between.

You wont have rust issues, and someone correct me if Im wrong, unless you use black primer which I wouldnt do Mine is a cheaper primer then flat black paint job just to hold me over temporarily.

I like a flat paint job on the right car. Usually an older car, or at least muscle car era. I don't really like it the look on third gens.

My question about Earl Sheib's flat black is do they use a clear coat? I doubt it. So don't expect it to last as long as say.. a dealer's paint job.

They do make flattening agents now, but they're not cheap. Popular Hot Rodding just did a flat black job on a mid 70's Laguna and their supplies ran $3k alone. If you pay a shop to paint on top of that, you're talking $$$.

From what I've heard flat black paint jobs are hard to apply because the clear goes on flat so it's hard to see coverage. You can end up with uneven coverage of clear that shows up, or just plain missed spots that will cause issues lately.

The point is, it's a difficult paint to apply from what I understand so it will run you more money.

Black primer is absolutely a bad idea. Primer is porous, which is why it's a good foundation for paint. Primer will hold water and actually help promote rust. I know this to be a fact... one thing I've never been able to figure out though is why people can usually get away with wet sanding primer.

Flat black cars are like redhead women....They're either smokin hot or butt ugly. There is no happy medium or in between. It's just cut & dry.
