so im going to paint my car...

Alright well the the time has come to paint the 82! The body doesnt need very much work at all but there are a few little spots. I have a place i will be painting it in and will be using a gravity feed gun and a 30gal compressor but have axcess to a 80gal if needed. I plan to paint it either sunset orange metallic or medium orange metallic with a metallic black around the base of the car and the spoiler too. My biggest concern is the bummpers have plenty of spider cracks and looks to have shurnken!! I also may have to find another hood since this one seems to have a big dip on the passenger side! Does snyone have any tips or suggestions on what i need to do for these issues i have? Ill post up some various pictures of the car tonight when i get home.

Re: so im going to paint my car...

Well usually those cracks in the paint will come through on the next top coat, I sand them out myself. It looks like you got a few things to take care of (dents) most cars that have been kicking around for years have some. Then sand the paint to prep for the primer and block sanding. You may have some issues with the air dry or rattle can stuff. I use a catalyst primer as the air dry or can stuff really gums up the paper when blocking. So after cutting the old finish with say 240 grit put on 2 to 3 coats of high build primer and sand those with finer grits as you go. A skilled painter will start to "see" how straight the car is at this time and how much more work is needed. This is when the better jobs get better is the blocking. This can take a long time to get the car nice but is well worth it before you spend some money on base and clear. It also is when I feel as though the car will " never get done" but trust me, it is worth it.
Try to keep the car as clean as possible between coats. I actually will un tape and retape the car after prep and before top coats.

I enjoy painting cars, but it is allot of work to get a nice finish and every time I look at one I did, I get a kick out of how bad they were and how nice they are now ! It is not easy for everybody to do and requires patience when you are learing but you can always redo a mistake! HTH

More than likely we will sand down to the cars original primer since the car was painted once before and it looked to be a pretty poor job. I figure that way we can find out if there were any repairs done previosly. I will more than likely replace that fender and hopefully save the door but the rest of the car really doesnt have any dents other thab were small stones may have hit
