Re: Getting my 89 Firebird painted *pics*
You're not kidding, man. I'm going to have to stop reading this thread, since my car's getting paint next week, and I'm afraid if I try to compare it to this I'm going to be disappointed. He's set the bar pretty high. Of course, I'm definitely going to be spending a lot less, and my car is going to look waaaaaaaay better than it does now, but still, I'm afraid in comparison to Justin's car, I'm going to have that achingly disappointed feeling you get when you meet your girlfriend's sister and realize she's 10 times better looking.
Oh, if I never post again, then that means my girlfriend knows the password on my laptop. Tell the cops that what's left of me is probably in the river.

more than you can afford, pal....
jk. Its $5500 for paint and labor, and I provided him with around $1k of new hardware, trim, weatherstrip etc. and about $700 for new glass including installation. I bought everything new GM that I could. Its showing too! Door handles that dont flap, doors that dont sag and creak, weatherstrip that wont whistle in the wind, and even wipers that wont rub the back of my hood when it rain
so roughly $7200. OUCH! It hurts more when I add it all up like that.

Re: Getting my 89 Firebird painted *pics*
the insurance thing still has to be sorted out. "Full coverage" would net me roughly $1500 if the car got wrecked. I need classic car insurance with no driving restrictions ie: I can drive it anywhere; but with an "agreed upon" value after I got the car appraised. In order to get one of those policies I need a spotless driving record, but I have a pesky speeding ticket from last year.

Check with American Hobbyist, they are a bit more understanding when it comes to moving violations. I have them for my Formula and the rates are very reasonable. I'm paying $283 per year for comp and collision with an agreed value of $20,000. My liability is still with State Farm due to North Carolina's insurance laws but still worth it.

Lmao, your right thats is deff more then i can afford lol. I can see it being that much because of all the GM replacement parts. Some paint shop around here told me about $7000g and all my body work and prep is done. I just need it to be sprayed. I know if done correctly that everything should be removed so i can see why it would cost so much, But between College and and Crappy job, im not raking in enough to even think about paint lol
.I figured maybe around $4000, but thats prob pushing it. I must find a decent body shop to paint this car, before it rots away lol
Thanks for the estimate and btw the car looks amazing.

That car looks great bro! If you don't mind me asking, where did you get the hatch glass? Was it new or used? If you can still get that new from somewhere I will be buying one ASAP. I really like it without the defroster lines too. Thanks!

cool thanks man, I will definatly be checking this out, I didnt know they made new ones when I switched out my hatches and the best one I could find has sanding marks on the glass from when some bozo repainted whatever car it used to be on. Did it come with the trim around the glass on it? I will definatly be getting a defrostless peice of glass before I get my windows tinted. It will look ****!

Re: Getting my 89 Firebird painted *pics*
the trim is not included and is not available anywhere so be careful removing it! The glass guy said he didnt want to install it so he left it to my body man. He said that the trim came off very easily, so he got lucky I guess.

Re: Getting my 89 Firebird painted *pics*
The trim is not hard to get off. The main thing to remember is not to pull it off becauses it bends easily. I find the best way to get it off is to take a flathead screw driver and put something rubber on the tip of it so it doesn't mark up the trim or glass. Then "chisel" it off with a hammer. Start at one of the ends and work your way up to the bend in the trim, then start on the opposite end. It will come off easily and perfectly everytime. Another note is not to let the flathead go between the trim and the glass, it will bend it that way also. Keep it butted against the trim.
Back to topic. Once I have my paint and body(hopefully in the next week and a half) done I know i'll wish I would have had more things done to the car like you are. New glass being one of them.

Re: Getting my 89 Firebird painted *pics*
Car is back in his shop getting the finishing touches. He's retouched a rocker panel, and drivers mirror. Still has to buff some parts to get some bubbles out of the clear. Windshield goes in Tuesday, pick the car up Saturday. I couldnt get the best shots because its in the garage, but....
Headlights are in and lined up

Everything in the front looks great...really impressed with this

New marker lights are installed and look awesome.

The clear front/rear marker lights look real nice off, but with the amber/red 194 bulbs in there they look really nice..I was impressed with how good they turned out. no pics sorry.
Wheels are color matched

Car is looking very nice. He just has to install the windshield and finish a few door glass adjustments and install the driver side mirror, then the door panels.
Plan is to pick it up saturday, drive it right to alignment shop and change the oil, then to the tint shop. Then bring it home and wash/wax it then detail the interior.
Sunday there is a pontiac club meeting I plan on going to and after that dropping it off at the stereo place for an alarm and some upholstery. once that is done I am DONE for now...im getting tired of all this bs lol

Revisited!!!
Man this thread brought back a ton of memories of butterflies and anticipation!
I brought the car back to the paint shop a few months ago. A few rub spots, and imperfections were found once I was in/around the car, detailing it etc. He said this would happen. He said I'm too damn picky lol. I actually found a few flaws when I picked up the car last year but he was like just "please take the car for awhile and enjoy it then come back next year" LOL I think he had enough of it.
Anyway, the stuff was minor.
There was some crap in his gun which turned into crap on my paint. He repainted the top of the rear bumper.

I was unable to avoid running over a retread last summer and got a big scratch on my grey stripe so I had it repainted

I found a scratch on my mirror so it was repainted

I also had some weird problem in my drivers door where I had a missing bumpstop for my door glass. It went down too far, and a bolt in the door took a chunk out of new glass. Same thing happened with my old glass. I had that addressed, and a new glass installed. Now I need new tint on that door. That will happen this week along with my annual oil change/inspection lol
I took the car to a car show yesterday with new and old vettes, Chevelles, Cadillacs etc...everything you see at a big car show. Despite being the only 3rdgen, a few people pulled me aside and were like wow your car sounds amazing and I can tell you like your car and have a lot into it.
Makes it all worth it when people say that stuff
