When painting a car that has been painted several times, it is generally best to take the car down to bare metal and start new. This will help with making a "straight" paint job as well as over all adhesion. Also, it will allow you to find and repair either poor previous repairs or spots that may be starting to form rust. I would recommend a DA sander with some 80 grit to strip it down and then epoxy the bare metal followed with a good 2K primer. Now if you are not concerned so much with straightness and hold out, a good scuff with some 400 grit paper (preferably on a long block) will give you a good biting surface to spray your sealer. You can use a DA with 400, but generally with that many mils of paint you will really make the car wavy. You can use what is called an interface pad on the DA and that will help with the wave, but it will require 3M Hook It paper which is pretty expensive.

well its ony got the 2 layer on it, doesnt even look like they primed it and just shot the black paint onto the original, if i give it a good once over with some 180 then some high build primer then sand it again with some 400-600 then shoot the paint you figure ill be alright? or should i epoxy primer it first? id just rather not take it all the way down right now.

80 on a DA will take forever......use 36 on a grinder/polisher.....

We've has restored dozens of cars......and thats the only way to take the down to bare metal. Just watch your edges and your good to go.

Always use a sanding block the longer the better never you're bare hand.Always sand in a x pattern and watch the body lines most you can tape one edge sand it then tape the other edge and sand it.

if you are going to bare metal Klean Strip works real nice but you have to be in a well ventilated area, well you always have to be no matter what you do for painting. Anyways you just brush it on over the paint wait a while then scrape it off with a putty knife and sand away what was left over. Be ready to see a lot of patch repair and bondo'd dents.
