Finally Sanding Has Begun!!
well after years of having a white door and no spoiler im finally starting on the bodywork phase of the camaro. Theres a lot to be done but heres a few begging pics.
Starting with a 120 grit wetsand then to a 220 wetsand on the whole car followed by a coat of high build primer.

Re: Finally Sanding Has Begun!!
thats pretty cool looking, but im keeping my grill on the car and if i cut that out id have nowhere to attach the grill and im keeping my fogs. so with all that in there you wouldnt be able to see the intercooler anyways. i kind of like having a "sleeper" so seeing the intercooler isnt that important to me.
i imagine cutting that part out would make the front bumper a bit weak, i bet if you accidently hit a curb or something with that it would flex in all the wront places

Re: Finally Sanding Has Begun!!
Haha yea I got the vent idea from u and flynlows, the spoiler is just coincidence
Funny thing is I've had all of it for years including the vents just was never able to get it done, I pulled the vents back off so it would paint better and not have hard tape lines around them.
Only difference is yours is actually a Z and mine is a v6 Z killer

Re: Finally Sanding Has Begun!!
well im stll thinking about it i think that with a bellmouth/80mm turbo inlet sticking threw the bumper there would look pretty good , and im going to a water to air intercooler so i dont need airflow threw the front for an a/a intercooler

Re: Finally Sanding Has Begun!!
Are you block sanding everything by hand? I've been sanding mine with a block by hand and it is taking forever, I was told by 2 body guys to use 320 grit wet. I see you are using 120 followed by 220, I assume that makes it alot easier to sand? I was told by the body guys that would be to coarse

Re: Finally Sanding Has Begun!!
yeah im doing mine by hand as well, and it is taking FFFOOOORRREEEVVVEEERRRR....
im doing the 120 to remove as much as the non stock paint job that i have on the car(this will be the 2nd aftermarket paint job) then the 220 to smooth it back out before the high build
im no body guy lol, once the primer is on ill be doing a lot higher grit sanding

Re: Finally Sanding Has Begun!!
I'll talk my body guy at work tomorrow, I been bugging him with questions almost daily since I started my paint project, im a mechanic this is my first try at body work. Looks like me and you are in the same boat mines in the garage the same way on jackstands and yes its getting cold out! Anyway looks like you got a good start keep it up, I know you need to be careful on the bumpers with that coarse grit! Maybe some body experts here can chime in!

Re: Finally Sanding Has Begun!!
Made a backer to fit under, tacked in place in the 'notch' parts (where the antenna escutcheon went to keep from spinning) then made a filler plug and welded in. A backer and fill with body filler would be just as well but, I prefer minimal filler when possible.
In the long run, it's about equivalent time weld/grind/high build vs backer/filler/sand/high build.

Re: Finally Sanding Has Begun!!
For any holes, I usually make a backer piece and then and a plug due to the fact I'm using flux.
It's way to tough to just make a plug and cleanly weld it in place, without pinholes, with such thin metal using flux. Mainly because it makes a really dirty tack weld (kind of like arc), unlike mig.
Mig or Tig, I wouldn't bother with a backer. I'd just tack and cool a plug in.

Re: Finally Sanding Has Begun!!
Take your time on the taking//welding as to not warp the pannels. I learned the hard way. As for block standing it is going to take some time but will look a lot sharper that just using a da and painting. Another note just incase you don't already know, when your blocking your body filler and the paper gets cloged you can use a piece of scotch bright and run it along the paper and it will clean most of it out so you don't have to use a lot of the expensive paper on every spot
