Re: factory door gap specs?
I'll ask my friend that owns a body shop.
I never even thought there was specs on it, just eyeball
& make sure the claw & latch work correctly, & the weather
strip seals!
Man, there's another lesson I learned!!

Re: factory door gap specs?
I'm with havoc. Years ago I saw the specs on the gaps for F-bodies but I don't remember them. Even, straight all around, nothing too close or too wide and go.
Back then GM along with the other manufacturers didn't care too much about gaps. They couldn't even get the paint to stay on!

keeslinger31--
Can you post the page? How did you get the info??
So I talked to my friend that owns the bodyshop.
He doesn't have anything with that kind of info-- just part #s & exploded views.

Re: factory door gap specs?
I grabbed a 1985 Firebird service manual from work the other day and have been all over that thing trying to find the gap specs. None anywhere. Next time I'm in the shop "library" I'll look for a body service book. The FSM has a lot of body info in it but not gap specs.
3mm is the low side of unibody tolerances for that time period. Gaps are wider then that.

Rule of thumb -- if you can stick your thumb between body panels, the gap is too big

That's a good one. I'll have to remember that one but not sure if it will work on 2000 up GM truck front ends. I've seen some pretty big gaps on some of those things.

Yeah, guess it depends on the size of your thumb too. I've seen lots of 1968-82 Corvettes with poorly repaired body/frame damage that I can just about fit a foot between the quarter panels and doors (okay, not really, but you get the idea).

Re: factory door gap specs?
I know what you mean. Seen some horrible work on those cars, but they fit rough new.
I've got a untouched 1954 Vette. The bottom of the right door sticks way out at the front especially. Most pics of these cars I've seen show the same thing.
BTW, my thumb is pretty big. Probably from a few hundred smashes with a hammer, and a little Arthur!
