rear window swap

i have a 91 firebird which is pretty much the base model, hardley any options on it, i have a rear window from a 91 camaro which has the defrosters on it, i can swap the windows pretty easily but how would i get the defrosters to work, would it be a power and ground to a toggle switch or is there more to it than that???

Re: rear window swap

As far as the swap goes....The bolts are identical. Unbolt, swap, rebolt..... Simple.

On the defroster....I'm not familiar with the circuit enough to say yes or no. Ask over in the Electronics section about swapping a defrost hatch on to a non-defrost car. Might already been covered & found in the Tech articles or by doing a Forum search.

Re: rear window swap

I'm trying to do the same thing with my 91 T/A...I already have the switch and 3 switch panel (fog lamps, hatch release, rear defrost) from another car, there's also a rear defroster relay that must be used which I also got from another car. The relay is located directly behind the map pocket on the passenger side of the dash. I may have already had my dash out when I installed my relay, so I don't recall if you need to remove the dash to install it. Might be able to just remove the lower panel and access it from the back.

All the factory wiring should be in place to convert it, I found the harness for the switch and the defroster relay taped up behind their respective trim pieces in my car. I would assume that there are leads for the rear glass itself behind the headliner.

The only thing I don't have is the glass...have yet to find a 90-92 defrost glass at a boneyard that wasn't covered in nasty purple tint.

I always found it strange that nearly every 91-92 has rear defrost except mine...and mine's got just about every other option except WS6.

I hope mine has the wiring as I have another hatch that I can put on with the defrost. Not used here much but is a blessing when it is needed. I will look for the relay when I strip a friends Camaro that also has it.
