If you're leaving it outside then at least put some rattle can enamel on it. Primer will soak moisture and it's just not designed for the elements. Rattle can sands off pretty easily when you get ready to paint.

Your looking for more of a sealer than a primer, epoxy is best but expensive.A very good medium cost is 5 star extreme 5425 it can be mixed as a primer or a sealer and is epoxy. search for it its good stuff.Keep in mind none of this is rattle can.Its mixed and sprayed with a gun.

Thanks for the advise guys. Ill see about getting a gun and some of that 5 star epoxy. as for the rust if its started to pit any is there a nice rust removing chemical? or is sandpaper my only viable option?
