And if you choose "other" in the poll, describe what you would like to see and made. I know everyone has alot of ideas and it would be nice to see what would be the popular choices.

Re: Poll..Which hood would you like to see made?

I voted "other"

One hood I would like to see, or maybe only would liek to see mocked up to see whether it works or not, is the C5.R Corvette style bulge/heat extraction hood for Camaro.

I think some restyling will be in order however.
Will see i I could provide a sketch.

http://www.7extrememotorsports.com/l...tte-c5r-17.jpg

Please do ignore the fender heat extractors. The central area might actually look nice (or rice) on a Camaro. Not sure yet.

I think however that with some retro restyling (make the powerbulge more like the one on the CTS-V and the heat extractor smaller) should make this work.

Also, no NACA ducts.

+1

This is kinda similar to the Japanese hood, but Im in agreement. you could do it to follow the IROC factory louver lines in some ways probably.

I always loved those C5R's. That could be a nice hood for a Firebird or Camaro.

85-92 Z28 hood in fiberglass, made to accept factory blisters/louvers. I'd buy one of those Rather than the ss hood I've had my eyes on.

Re: Poll..Which hood would you like to see made?

I have wondered if there would be any demand for the factory 85-90 louvered and the 91-92 blistered hoods. Both of these hoods could be made with the louvers and blisters molded into them to eliminate having to search or replace those extra parts. They would be good for restoration or for those that love the factory look. And the larger cowl and heat extractor hoods would be for the racers and those with other mods where clearence is needed.

I'd like to see a factory(ish) style TA/GTA hood with functioning vents done in 'glass or perferably CF.

Re: Poll..Which hood would you like to see made?

Yeah, it would be nice to see a Trans Am(vented) hood for those that want to restore or go to a lighter hood. Alot of these hoods are getting hard to find. I just picked up a stock Firebird hood for $40 and i'll use it as my base for my custom hood plug.

Below is a Photoshop pic that another member made up. I kinda liked the looks of both of these.

I love the sunoco style hood. Something about the cowl following the wide body lines just looks good. Id love to see one with a heat extractor.

Re: Poll..Which hood would you like to see made?

Here is my idea for a 442 hood. Even though I did this on a 91-92 Trans Am, It would probably look and flow better on a Camaro or the 85-90 Trans Ams

I made a ton of sketches trying various minor variations on the C5.R style hood but I can not get it to work with the bodylines of the thirdgen F bodies.

The versions that work best, and where I see at least some hope of finding a design I deem acceptable are closer to the racing CTS-V hood then to the C5.R hood

Re: Poll..Which hood would you like to see made?

I see what you mean with the Cadillac hood. It might flow better with the F-bodies then the Vette hood. Although that would depend on what you have. The "square-ish" lines of the caddy would work with the camaro and the 85-90 T/As where the Vette hood being more rounded would suit the 91-92 firebirds.

Something like this in fiberglass for our cars would look pretty BA I think. I know there is one on here done kind of similar.

Re: Poll..Which hood would you like to see made?

Two actually, but one (projectRS) scrapped his project and replaced by an early camaro hood.

The other one replaced the louver area with plexiglass, if those are the ones you mean.

One aftermarket manufacturer already offers a similar hood for third gen firebirds. I think I've seen it on hawks thirdgen (? not sure)

Anyways, I've just made some more sketches.
On one piece of paper I made so many corrections that I actually pencilled all the way through the sheet... twice.

I have one optically working hood based on the C5.R hood for the 1991 and 1992 Firebirds.

Still working on Camaro hoods.

@ 92Z, I'll try the above and see if I can make that work for the third gens

@ firehawk 1988, I'll upload a rough sketch (pen rather then pencil because I started having difficulties recognizing the lines through all the erased leftovers) within about the next 2 hours.

Update:

Name: 1992_firebird_hood.jpg
Views: 177

I guess it is quite specific and will not find many fans. Still, on a late 3rd gen firebird that is what I´d like my hood to look like.

Solitaire, That sketch looks great!!! I'm actually not a fan of the heat extractor hoods, but that one would look great on both Camaros and
Firebirds.

Other

I would like to see a stock IROC hood with a 2" cowl down the center. I have the Turbo/Daytona hood which I love.. But wouldn't mind finding one with a straight 2" cowl down the center of the hood including the hood louvers which would be used for extraction..

Here's a rough idea of the Sunoco hood with louvers(molded into the hood). Its not exactly a Cowl hood with louvers but you get the idea.

I think that if someone built that it would sell... I'm curious what it would look like on a '82-90 TA... since it clearly has harder lines than the 91/92... I do wonder if once you put the heat extractor far enough back to make it truely functinal it might not look funny unless you start the bulged part ahead of the heat extractor.

What I'm thinking is the Camaro hood, with the bulge that Goodmark uses for the '99-'01 Silverado / Sierra.

I may have to try it in steel. Cut and weld.

Re: Poll..Which hood would you like to see made?

Actually the rendering i did was off that very same hood. After Stephen had got it from Frychicken he sent me pics and talked to me about the idea of making one of those in fiberglass. Frychicken did alot of work to that hood and I seen how he built it. Which is something i can dupilicate with my welding expierence. But seeing how you would have to go out and find stock hoods to cut up and sell, it would be best to make a fiberglass version similar to that hood. Seems like a good idea since alot of guys loved it on this site. A heat extractor hood isn't something i would want, but if i was going to build my first hood to sell to the pubic, it would be a hood like that. The others would come afterwards.

Is he going to have them made in fiberglass & sell them? Looks pretty cool, but that pic doesn't really the whole hood.

Re: Poll..Which hood would you like to see made?

Not that i know of. The reason we talked was because after i get my Camaro project done i'm going to build a plug and mold for a fiberglass hood. I worked in the fiberglass industy for 10 years making air strippers, blowers and parts for them. I have the expierence but i want to try it and see. If it works out good(and i'm picky about my work) then who knows. But i have to start somewhere. Could lead to a business, could lead to a few hoods that us F-body owners can enjoy. With this economy and the way these cars are becoming rare(good ones), you never know.

Re: Poll..Which hood would you like to see made?

I see no problem with cutting up the plain Camaro hoods. Only the IROC-Z versions shouldn't be molested.
The fiberglass advantage is weight, and that's appealing.
I'll be ready for some extra hood clearance by next summer. If I can find something I like by then, great!
I'd rather buy 1 fiberglass hood than rework 2 steel into 1 steel.

Below is a Photoshop pic that another member made up. I kinda liked the looks of both of these.
Now THAT would be cool. I've thought about a way to try to make the stock vents functional for years. I would definitely get out the check book for that.

Just another idea that came to me, is not quite the usual approach but should be fairly easy to realize.

Again, will most likely not find a lot of fans as shaker hoods were more a Firebird kind of thing

Nice... you have a good eye for what works with the car's body lines... people keep trying to put those shakers on 3rd gen birds, and they just don't work, just like the 4th gen style WS6 hoods don't (I like my '97 WS6, I hate those hoods on 3rd gens). I would have never thougth of trying that on a camaro but it does work... though I suspect that a factory one would actually be too small to get that look out of it.

I wasn't going to say anything but it seems like half the time I look in on this thread and a few other hood threads I have the same reaction, and I'm betting I'm not the only one- you camaro guys have a ton of hood choices that are fairly easily available, and most of the "different" things that people suggest would not be hard to make from one of the available aftermarket hoods. I kind of wish you guys would lay off these threads. There aren't a lot of good choices for 'birds, and nothing good to build a lot of these hood ideas off of... the only really easily available hoods for them are obnoxious cowl hoods that really wouldn't work for much besides a dedicated drag car (and I would argue don't have lines that work well with any 'bird) and 4th gen WS6 styles which again, don't work well with the lines of the car and are too big to make most other stuff out of it. There aren't even good flat or factory style hoods out there, and the factory hoods are getting hard to get in decent shape.

Yea, i get it, it would be great to go out and just buy exactly what you want, but that's not real world. OTOH, because of the current market conditions if someone comes out with something they seem to half *** the thing and put it out for a camaro and "if there is enough interest we'll consider a firebird version." Then because of the other choices and half assed approach it doesn't sell well enough and no other firebird choice ever happens. I'm convinced a nice TA hood done well would sell well because of a lack of competition. Convinced enough that I've even considered financing a production run of them a few times (If I could get them made at a price point that would leave room for a profit and still sell at a reasonable price), but so far, everyone talking "I can make them" can't seem to even if someone else gives them the money to do it...

Re: Poll..Which hood would you like to see made?

I started this thread for both fun and for gathering info from other Third gen owners on ideas. Sometimes its nice to chat with others who have something in common(camaros and firebirds) and would like to see more options for our cars.

Yes, in the real world, sometimes it wouldn't make good business sense to make a couple hoods for so few customers that make up a very small portion of the aftermarket industry. Ours cars are becoming more rare as the years pass by and certain parts are becoming even harder to get used. WE are part of a group that alot of restoration companies have left behind due to the fact our cars don't carry the value, age(some are now becoming antiques if you go back 25 years), or the sentimental/historical attachment that other cars bring. WE are the bastard children of the F-body generation that others group us in the trailer trash years or the cheap and dull 80's junky car era. WE don't see it that way or like that idea at all.

Aftermarket companies thrive on new designs for newer cars to keep everything fresh and continue on making profits. Look at how companies jump at making new parts for the 5th gen Camaro and what they can charge for them. They know if you can buy a $35K car you can pay $1000 for an exhaust system or $1000 for fiberglass hood. WE wouldn't pay that for our cars. And today a company doesn't want to go backwards and build a hood for a 3rd Gen car since the demand and profitablity isn't there. Thats why cowl hoods are so popular.

But sometimes, people come along and bring something new and fresh to these cars and it gets interest. Just like Frychikn's heat extractor hood. This guy spent his spare time and skills to create something new for these cars and ALOT of guys loved it. I say more power to them for trying and attempting any type of project of this nature. WE need more of that and that alone will show that these cars are important to us and we would like to see more done with them.

As i said before, I will start on a hood when i get the chance(after my camaro project is done), but i make no guarantees on wether it will be a one off build or if i make others to sell. The economy and uncertainty of taking any kind of a chance in the business world today is what stops alot of people from trying anything.

Re: Poll..Which hood would you like to see made?

I voted other as I'm making my own mold at this time for my 1987 T/A.
I've decided to go with the ZL-1 scoop and lower it an inch and a half
giving me a two and a half inch tall scoop with heat extractor. And I've
removed the front fake hood vents but left the side hood vents. I'm almost
finished making my plug and will be moving onto the mold by next week.

Id rather see the vfr sunoco style 6'' cowl, in a 4" instead. The six just looks to large for street application.

Re: Poll..Which hood would you like to see made?

Firebird hood is excellent in my opinion. I like the Camaro hood, but not on a thirdgen. I took your sketches and I'll alter the Camaro one with where you were going with it and see what you think. I know what you're getting at, but I don't think that approach is quite right because of the differing body contours between the car and the hood/hood scoop. This is particularly noticable when comparing front bumpers and the hoods. The firebird looks right because the front bumper is not 'rigid' looking and has organic shaping. The Camaro however has mostly strict boxy contours, and that's why I think it conflicts with the hood.

Re: Poll..Which hood would you like to see made?

For the brave and daring there is still a lot that can be done with these cars.

Personally I do not like too flashy styling. I find my sketches already quite exaggerated as they are.

A factory 2nd gen shaker would be far too smal to work on a 3rd gen IMO.

Making a approx. 20" wide, 27" long shaker that raises about 2 1/2" - 3" above the stock hood would work better with the thirdgen bodylines. They are just not as "busy" as the 2nd gens.

I thought of doing this to a factory hood. Most of the hole is already in it anyways, as the previous owner had a scoop sticking through it.

Re: Poll..Which hood would you like to see made?

Well Firehawk1988 you wanted to see my progress on my hood here it is.
Now this is not finished I still have alot of sanding still to do before paint.
And this is just a plug to make the mold so I can then make the fiberglass
or CF hood out of.
