Mint condition bumper, but the wrong color

Question for you. I just found a beautiful bumper cover for my camaro. there's not a chip of spider line crack on it. The only problem with it is the fact that it's bright RED, and my car needs to be grey.

When there aren't any issues with chips or cracks, what's the best way to prepare a part like this before recoat? Do I take it down to Base, factory primer, or just scuff up the clear and spray right over it? I know that the thicker the layers of paint on a bumper, the more likely spider cracks are later

Clean it up, degrease it, scuff it, and shoot it with quality automotive paint. Sounds straightforward.

thanks, I was worried about putting Base and clear over base and clear. No issues with that?

As long as it's cured you should not have any problem (and I am assuming it is perhaps the original paint?). Anyways, just scuff it with 400 grit wet to knock down what clear coat and any chips are in the existing paint to get a nice smooth surface to paint the new color and clear coats on. Be sure and degrease and use a flex additive in the paints if you can.

Without seeing it, one never knows. Based on what you described I would say it isn't a problem. Always nice to put a light coat of catalyzed primer over it.

i guess when it's in my posession I need to test and area to see how thick the paint is on it. As nice as it looks, I doubt it's the original paint. I may find it already has base/clear/base/clear on it

This thing is beautiful.. too bad I don't have a red car
