83 Firebird front ground effect?
83 Firebird front ground effect?
Mine is without it and I can't find it anywhere! It would look so much better with it on. The only thing I can find are these "extreme" ones that just look dumb to me. Is there any place to buy it these days?

ya whatever it is called. you are right, hawkes does have it. they call it a front spoiler. Sweet. Looks like there is three parts though that I need, the front spoiler and the fender ground effect but they are all of that grrr lol.

This is what you need. It is 1 piece. The 3 piece deflectors are for the later Trans Ams and GTA's.

I hate to put the pressure on you but.... That front Air Dam is damn important! If you look from the engine compartment down with no radiator or condenser in it you can see the large "shark mouth" air dam and what it does. Without it you car will be totally relying on the fan. That means when your foot is pushin' the loud pedal out to the grill it is going to get hot, real hot. The fan really is only there to provide air to the radiator and air conditioning condenser at low speeds. The early Gen 3 no grill design is straight out of high speed stock cars running on big tracks. The design, if it is built correctly does a few things nicely. As I said above it forces air that is trying to jet under the car and forces it up through the radiator. The .21 air tunnel coefficient of drag has a lot to do with this. Just watch the NASCAR boys put on and remove duct tape looking for just the right airflow (now pushed up there by the splitter design). Remember, the amount of air under the car must be kept at a minimum. Since the air dam redirects what it can up through the bottom shark mouth. It also creates lift. The Firebird rear spoiler if fully functional and provides some nice downforce to compensate. Now to make it all push down equal you should be sure to give the car a slight "rake" about 1" lower in front. This will counter the lift provided by the dam. John Delorean had the first third gen set up just like that for the prototype. If you really want to see how she will handle at very high speeds (on the track guy's) use a good set of front springs that are about a one inch drop and stiff. Chuck Jenks brought the first SLP to my technical department before I retired. He used an aluminum dam because the rubber ones flatten out at about 150mph and the motor gets hot quick. The SLP prototype was awesome. I was lucky enough to drive it around for evaluation for two months! Had it up to MIS for several test and tunes. Very nice 200 MPH hot rods.

The airdam under the core support isn't just a scoop. What it actually does, surprisingly, is keep hot air from recirculating. Without it, air heated by the radiator can actually travel forward underneath the radiator, because of turbulence, and this can cause overheating in stop-and-go traffic as well as at 55 MPH. I learned this the hard way with my '91 RS LO3. Before finding a replacement, I even tried re-wiring the fan to ignition-hot. That helped, but nowhere near enough.
