Can't open hatch?

Just bought this '83 z/28 and of-coarse only 1 key for the Ignition, and it doesn't work for the hatch. How would I go about removing the lock cylinder, or getting the hatch open?

Re: Can't open hatch?

So you have no door key? Or your door key doesn't open the hatch? is there a switch on the center console to release the hatch?

Re: Can't open hatch?

Hmm honestly I havnt tried locking it yet, it stays in the garage. I will try the key in the door and see if it works, but I kinda doubt it will work, and no there is no other hatch release that I have found.

Does anybody know how to remove the lock? Or just bust it so I can open it?

Re: Can't open hatch?

I really hate to admitting this but I was at the yard one day and I found some tail lights I wanted so I had to bust the trunk lock on this beautiful 82 Z28. All I used was a hammer and a flat head screw driver. I did mess up the surrounding a bit. But think of it this way once you bust it you will have to get a new one and you will probably have to get new door lock cylinders as well. Just get a key made for the doors and hatch. It's easier and cheaper than replacing everything.

Re: Can't open hatch?

uhh if you climb into the back and remove the plastic surround you can twist this little thing and pop the trunk right open, had to do it frequently in my old firebird as someone tried to break into my trunk and busted the lock

Re: Can't open hatch?

take a door lock out and take it to a locksmith and have a new key made. costs like $40 for them to match a key to the lock.

Re: Can't open hatch?

Well, I was looking, and I can get a set of 3 lock cylinders with 2 keys, for 30-40 bucks depending on chrome or black.

I don't have a door key or hatch key, I told my wife that, and what does she do, she locks the car, haha. First I said **** it, and drilled out the drivers door lock cylinder, it was kinda messed up anyways, looks like someone did the same thing I did. So, I drilled it out, and still couldn't figure out how to open it. So i called my buddy that drives a tow truck, he unlocked it with a slim jim.

But, I still have no way of getting the trunk hatch open, and I need new door cylinders anyways. How would I go about drilling out the cylinder or whatever, just so I can open the hatch? I'm gonna order the new lock cylinders anyways, just don't want to hurt the car.

And I really don't want to get a key made, for the lock cylinders, since i'm replacing them anyways.

Re: Can't open hatch?

as stated before, you can climb through the back and open it from the inside (which take some work and possbily cutting up the rear plastics) or drill out the lock, or get a locksmith to pick it for like $40.

Re: Can't open hatch?

you dont have to cut the plastic at all, theres like 4 little plastic screws and the you can just lift it out, ant the bingo, theres the lock

Re: Can't open hatch?

the rear hatch plastic covering that part of the hatch usually has 2 screws in the top side that you cant get to with the hatch closed.

Re: Can't open hatch?

although you might be able to get it loose and lift it up and slide a hand under it to get to the lock mechanism.

Re: Can't open hatch?

I have the same problem with the '85 T/A I bought for my wife. The trunk lock is missing a bunch of parts where someone tried to use a screwdriver to open it and messed up a lot of parts in the process (including the surrounding plastic). I'm curious of a good solution. The two metal screws covered by the hatch make it interesting to get the cover off, and I can't get a hand around to pop the latch. My hatch solenoid doesn't work either. I'm willing to drill out the lock cylinder, I would prefer doing it from the exterior versus the interior, because I don't want to ruin the interior panel.

When we bought our car it came with a single key. I had a power latch, locking T-Tops and rear locking tray in the hatch area. The T-Tops, rear locking tray use 4 tumblers. The doors and rear hatch use 6 tumblers at least that is what my locksmith told me.
I was able to take him over the rear locking tray but you could take the door lock off and take it to a locksmith. Honestly, hacking into anything in the car you might regret. If you start ruining pieces you might regret it later and think why you did it. I paid $65 and he came to my house to finish the last two tumblers. They use a progression chart.

Re: Can't open hatch?

I have had to crawl in to the back in a junkyard to try and open the hatch for a pair of tail lights too! Those two little screws on top stymied me as well. I took a hammer and a tire iron to the lock ultimately. I would support the two options offered so far: have a locksmith come out and open it, then replace all 3 locks with new ones or try the vin with the dealer. As you said, you now have to replace the locks anyway, so these are the only options that won't result in damaging the car that you will have to repair- unnecessarily.

Got mine open! Switch wouldn't work but the other day the solenoid decided to work for the first time since I've owned it.
