Re: Door hing problem

The door detent bar is part of the door side of the lower hinge. If the pin is bad you can repair it like the previous owner of my Firebird did by grinding off the head, punching out the pin and using s nut and bolt. Trust me, the repair looks crappy and the bar jumps and pops as it rides on the door detent roller. The best repair would be to install a new rivet and bar. But it is a swaged rivet and the average guy isn't going to have a hydraulic press that they can fit into that spot to squeeze the rivet. You could simulate it by grinding off the botom of a good rivet from a donor car, then install it in the new bar and weld a washer to the rivet. Grind it smooth, then paint it to match the hinge and it will look much like the old formed rivet.

Re: Door hing problem

You will want to double check, but I believe in my Classic catalog that the hinge is available to be replaced. You can also try some of Lon's suggestions, I know they are much cheaper than the hinge. I believe the hinge itself was in the $100+ range.

I bought my '87 Trans Am from a fairly large man. He bent the hinge whenever he got into car since he would lean on it for support. It looks like only the detent bar from the lower hinge is bent though. The pins and hinge itself look to be pretty good. When I open the door, it pops when it is halfway open. Is there a way to only replace the detent bar/roller? Or is that only a part of the hinge.

Re: Door hing problem

The detent bar is part of the door half of the hinge. That half is welded to the door. GM makes a replacement hinge that would solve your problem. However it involves a bit of work to install and is expensive. You have to drill out the existing sotwelds that hold the hinge to the door. The repair hinge includes a template that you use to drill new holes to bolt on the hinge. There is a threaded plate that goes inside the door shell then the hinge bolts to the door.

So long as the detent bar pin is ont damaged you may be able to straighten the detent bar with a couple of clamps.
