Ground effects painting

So the paint is chipping from the front spoiler and front valence (bumper cover?) and I've been told by 2 body shops that if they sand it down the paint won't stick to the plastic, they can only spray over the paint that's there but the problem is all the peeling will ruin that right away, so before I go buy one that the paint isn't peeling and just have them spray over it, are they right about this? If I sand it down will primer stick to it? Then paint over it? Or do I just need to buy ones without peeling paint? Thanks in advance for the help

Primer will stick to plastic. Glaze (flexable) will stick to plastic. Make repairs (eg. tab repair, cracks), glaze (filler) any repairs that need to be smooth, also any lows, deep scraches, ect. Feather edge any/all chipping paint. Primer, there are a few you can use, I would use Epoxy. Apply sealer. Paint as desired. Make sure to use adhesion promoter where required. Make sure to use a wax and grease remove desingned for plasic use.

Keep in mind that with body shop rates around $75 an hour if it takes several hours to repair a part that costs say, $100 to replace, then it would be cheaper and easier for everyone to replace the part.

Re: Ground effects painting

Sand it all down and fix all damage the paint will stick? And I think I need the fro t spoiler replaced anyways because there are a bunch of stress cracks which you can't really fix

"Sand it all down and fix all damage the paint will stick?"

Correct, but you do not have "sand it all down" (strip.) You can "feather edge" the damged (peeling) areas. Do a search on how to feather edge. This will also show you proper sanding methods, eg. cross sanding, how to maintian body lines. The basic concept is sand the paint edges where you have damage/made repairs, until the edge shows all of the layers of the previous paint job. Say, you sand an area that is peeling down to the bare plastic. You would then sand your paint edge until you can see the layers, primer, sealer, color coat, in rings like a cut tree. If it feather edges then the paint in the area is sticking. If the paint is not sticking when you try to feather edge it will come off in big chunks, not allowing the rings to show. Sand until you see rings and you will know you are past the damage.

"I think I need the front spoiler replaced anyways because there are a bunch of stress cracks which you can't really fix."

These are repairable in the same way as peeling. However, then our time cost vs. replacement cost comes into play. More than likely, the only way repair would be feasable is if you sanded the rapairs yourself. Its a matter of what your time is worth to you.

Re: Ground effects painting

Well it's getting worse everyday, it basically down to the whole thing being bare plastic except a few spots and buying a front spoiler would probably be the best because those cracks could be almost all the way through the spoiler

"a picture is worth a thousand words" I dought they go all the way through the spoiler/front ground effect. However, if they did, it is still repairable as long as time vs. money.

Re: Ground effects painting

I don't have a picture right now but all I needed to know is that it can be painted with some work instead of buying a new one, thanks for all the help
