Electric sprayguns

Its spring and I'm looking to finish up some body work. The end goal is to have a nice driver. This is going to be my first time spraying a car.

I have access to an electric spray gun, I was wondering if anyone has used one and what the results were. Currently the car is rattle canned (fail), so anything should be better.

Any input is appreciated.

No, no, no, no, no....unless it's one of those turbine types. Otherwise, no, no, no.

Re: Electric sprayguns

Electric spray guns......AKA "burp guns"
For painting your house..........YES!

For fine finish work where a smooth finish is required
Like painting cars...................NO!
Heck with most "burp guns" won't shoot oil base paints anyhoo !!!!!!!!

RENT a spray rig instead.

Re: Electric sprayguns

Okay, so i guess that idea is out of the window.. I do have a spray gun though its most likely ancient. What else would i need aside from the spray gun and air compressor?

I appreciate the responses.

Re: Electric sprayguns

Practice and experience. Go to Harbor Freight and buy a cheap HVLP gun and practice on lots of things first.

Re: Electric sprayguns

Home Depot. Buy a Wagner control spray with seperate turbine unit, not the one with the turbine built on the handle. $140. Painted my car and several other one with it. A little trick tho, tape a nickle on the gun where the adjusting thumb wheel makes contact for a finer spray and yes pratice with it first, small adjustments.

Re: Electric sprayguns

http://www.harborfreight.com/air-too...gun-66222.html would something like this work well? Not planning to do much painting so $140 would be a little steep at the moment.

Re: Electric sprayguns

Nope, you won't like that for several reasons. Gravity fed which means if you are painting something horizontal like the top of your car, you are more than likely going to spill paint. Second, takes a sizeable air compressor, along with that you get moisture, and other contaminants. You are going to spend around $400 on paint materials if you do this right, base coat clear coat. (PPG Shopline) A $140 system will be fine and worth the investment.
I painted this car with one after my daughter totalled it and I put it back together

Re: Electric sprayguns

That's perfect blt. Research will help you realize the preferred method. You won't spill paint, it doesn't take a large compressor and moisture and contaminants can be prevented if you do your research. Don't use anything with "Wagner" on the side. Sheesh.

Re: Electric sprayguns

Everyone is entitled to an opinion. It you are used to old school ways of doing things, thats fine. I am just reporting my experience with a wagner product that performed well for me. The warm air helps prevent condensation forming at the end of the gun (fish eye effect) The warm air lets you get closer to the painted object. Again my opinion.
I painted the quarter panels of my Explorer with the same gun

Re: Electric sprayguns

I have one of those. Works well as log as you have enough air compressor to drive it or pace your painting to allow the air compressor to keep up. You can buy a comparable gun at Wal mart (at least they stock them here) by Camell Hausfield.

I did buy a used Cambell Hausfield turbine unit much larger capacity off of craigs list here. The guy just used it to finish doors with. I bought a replacement gun for it.

The Duplicolor premixed paint will work for you, about $27 a quart for the paint and clear coat. When I did my car all apart, doors, hood, painted everything with about 5 quarts of each. Course that dores not include sand paper, laquer thinner for clean up, disposal and all the other things that add up to the cost.

Just out of curiousity, how big of an air compressor do you have available? Air dryer? Oil seperator?

Re: Electric sprayguns

A 25 gallon tank sounds fine but the air delivery capacity is what is important. There are 2 types of air compressors available oiless (no need for oil seperator) and oil lubricated, the oil will generally stay entrained with the air delivered. An air dryer is needed because when you compress air the moisture is squeezed together and collects in the air tank and is also entrained to point of delivery. An air dryer is like a refrigeration unit designed to remove most of the moisture.

Re: Electric sprayguns

I was trying to find some pictures of a 95 Ford F800 box truck I used to own that I painted outside with that wagner gun. I'll find them when I stop looking, turned out great using the Duplicolor white paint.
