Brother's tilt column busted;dangerous to drive.
My brother's steering column broke somewhere inside,so now it wiggles around all different directions. If you set your hand on it,it goes down at the point where the tilt is.It is hard to drive because the column moves around. He hasn't had a chance to pull it apart yet.Wanted to know if anyone might have an idea of what part might be broken.I'm sure once he pulls it apart he'll find it.But he wanted a heads up before he does.BTW,it's an 89 RS.

just go to the parts yard and pick one up for about 75.00. they are easy to swap and you dont have to go thru the blood sweat and tears of tearing one down. believe me they are a beeyaach.

RSPeed, This happened to me and I was able to fix it. It is a pain in the *** though. You have to pull the steering column (easiest to do this way) but before you do that pull the steering wheel and lock plate. Once you do this you will see your cancelimg cam and turnsignal switch. You need to pull these as well. You will also need to pull the signal lever tilt lever hazard button and lock cylinder. Once thats off take the cover off. You will need torques bit for this. Ok now once all thats out of the way and you look into the openings you will see 4 bolts about 1/4 inch but they need star sockets. (I didn't have them but a 1/4 inch socket worked for me) 2 of the 4 should be accessable tighen them now they will be loose as h*** A 3rd one can be reached by taking the ignition switch apart. I never was able to get the 4th. The 2 piviot pins need to be removed to get that one so I said screw it. I put some sealant on the 4th so it wouldn't back out all the way and chew up the insides. Put some lock tite on the others though. If you take the pivot pins out with a punch it will be all that much easier and you will get all four. I didn't do that because I didn't have the right tools at the time and I didn't have the time either. After that put it all togeter. Hope this helps.
