I'm fixing to try and change a power window door over to a manuel one.Anyone want to know how it gose?

 

I just did the reverse last month (NO way in heck was I going to put ANOTHER hole in my GTA deluxe door panels!). The holes for the manual regulator are the ones down and slightly rearwards (towards the bottom and rear of the door, where the latch is) from where your current power regulators are. You will need to remove practically every track from the door, so mark where the bolts are on the door shell and the tracks that are exposed (upper felts, rear guide including up-stop, etc). Get a pair of rubber door stops to put in between the glass and the inner side of the door shell or you'll have a lot of fun lining up the regulators while keeping the glass up in place. Then put everything back in again using your marked circles as guides. And don't forget to put the holes for the cranks in the door panels.

 

I got good panels on the doors Im wanting to take off.Someone did a pee poor job of fixing some damage to one of my manuel doors and I got a compleat set of power doors just sitting around.If it's not to much trouble and dosn't cost me anything,thought i'd try changing them around for the better looking one.If my panel dosnt get damaged in taking it off,all I gota do is swap the crank rails and guilds then put the manuel panel on it.No welding or anything I cant see?just nuts and bolts/screws?

 

Only thing you need to do is to remove the tracks (10mm bolts), fuzzies, mark the position of the manual regulators on the power doors (so you don't get messed up), and cut the heads off of the rivets. Go out and get some nice and short 1/4" bolts and nuts if you don't want to or can't use rivets (due to no rivet gun, obviously). You'll need to cut the ends of the bolts off (put them in from the back side and the nuts on the door panel side of the shell, then cut off the extra) to get the door panels and everything back on right.

And don't cut the power window motor connectors off... Pull the dash pad and pull out the harness in it's entirety and try to sell it if you can.

 

I gota take the power motor out dont I?Might as well remove the power door lock while I'm at it.Looks like the window motor would be right in the way of the window crank.I pulled the whole harness out of the car that got totaled.The pass.door im working on now has the wireing that runs all the way across where it and the drivers side joined together.Everything worked on them.windows were a little slow but did work.

 

Yes, you have to completely replace the power window regulator with the manual window regulator. Don't touch the power door lock parts. They're not in the way. Unless you don't want them. And expect to get really greasy. Also grease the tracks and regulator while they're out.

 

what about any spring issues?The repair manuel said there are some springs that can be dangerous,I felt around in there and it seams to be a tight wound spring at the end of the motor asembly

 

You are taking the window regulators out in one piece. You're not taking the window motors off of the regulators. The spring is irrelevant.

 

great to hear that!Is there an easyer way to take the door off the car?I totaly dissasembeled the firebird so the fenders were out of the way.

 

Lower the window. Take the door panel off. Close and latch door (don't lock it). Take out 6 hinge bolts (2 on inside for bottom hinge) with 15mm socket (lower inside bolts) and 13mm short socket for other 4. Unlatch door and it pops off. This is after all wiring and crud has been removed from door. Use inner door frame to carry door away (which is why the door panel was removed and also you will need to take it off anyways). They're heavy SOB's (even stripped down), just to warn you. You may or may not want another person helping.

You will need to put the regulator in the down position to start, put 2-3 bolts in the regulator holes, put the regulator on the door track and put the bolts through the door shell (bolts will be facing INTO the car). Put the nuts on the bolts on the regulator, put the tracks back in (using the marked circles as guides to where everything is supposed to line up), and put the window up before putting the bolt in the remaining hole. Cut the ends of the bolts off and put the door back together.
